Here are the services I offer, some of my thoughts on what makes for good writing, and what it’s like to work with me.
Writing Services
–Nonfiction. Having a tough time describing your product? Need a bio written for your site? Something else and not sure where to start? I have written for the websites of a concrete-countertop manufacturer, an electrician, an arborist, and more. I have also written for my own sites. I can help describe your product, your business, or your mission in a way that’s clear and easy to read.
–Editing. I have edited fiction and nonfiction; for myself, for a company website while an employee, in person at writing workshops, and online. I will give you my honest opinion of your work, following whatever guidelines we decide on to evaluate it. I know what it’s like to put a lot of effort into writing and the mixed feelings that come from seeing suggestions on what to change or cut, even when they’re good ones. I always work to keep my edits, suggestions, and general feedback clear and honest, but also polite and respectful to you and your work.
–Fiction. I can write an original work of fiction for you, or help you bring your idea to life. My sci-fi stories have appeared in The Weird and Whatnot and Teleport Magazine. I have two children’s books currently for sale on Amazon. The first is called Adventures of a Bowling Shoe and is a humorous (also a little gritty) look at the life of a rental bowling shoe. The second is a picture book about strangely shaped animal shoes. I’m most experienced in science fiction, but I care more about compelling ideas than sticking to a particular genre.
–Beta Reading. Besides reading the works of around 35 people in writing workshops and online, I have read over 360 published books. These range from books by John Milton and Herman Melville to Charles Darwin and Norbert Wiener; from the Epic of Gilgamesh to War and Peace. History, vampire romance, science books–you name it. I have experience with books across different genres and millennia to use when beta reading your work.
–Rewriting Text as a Native English Speaker for Other English Speakers. Don’t let a chunky description stand in the way of selling your product or getting readers to your website. Hey, I get it! It’s tough to write in a first language, never mind a second or third. I can rewrite your product descriptions or other content so it flows more naturally for an English-speaking audience.
What Makes Good Writing?
There are as many opinions on what makes for good writing as there are writers, but here are eight characteristics of good writing that I like to follow:
1. It must be clear and to the point.
2. It engages readers and makes them want to read more, instead of being boring.
3. It does not use worn-out phrases that make readers yawn, like "world-class" or "cutting-edge."
4. It does not use big words just because they’re big, when small words would work just as well.
5. It is specific wherever possible, because it's much more powerful to say: "Used by more than 6,100 companies" than to say: "Used widely."
7. Good language is grammatically correct without being stuffy.
8. Good writing tells stories where appropriate, because that's what people remember and repeat to others.
