Numerical Simulation of Wellbore Stability in Hydrated Shale (FDEM / COMSOL)
Worldwide
Title:
Numerical Simulation of Wellbore Stability in Hydrated Shale (FDEM / COMSOL)
Description:
We need a geomechanics or numerical modeling expert to build a 3D coupled Hydro–Mechanical–Thermal–Chemical (HMTC) model for hydrated shale or mudstone wellbore stability.
The model should simulate stress redistribution and concentration after wellbore excavation, fluid–solid coupling with seepage and hydration swelling or degradation, and fracture initiation, propagation, and block detachment or collapse (shear and tensile failures).
The model must allow changing wellbore diameter and formation dip angle for comparative studies.
Deliverables:
A complete and runnable 3D HMTC model (1 set), including geometry, mesh, material parameters, boundary conditions, coupling setup, and solver configuration.
Simulation results for different wellbore diameters, formation dips, and lithological conditions, including stress, strain, pore pressure, fracture development, creep, and collapse phenomena.
Visualized outputs (figures or animations) showing stress–strain–pore pressure evolution, fracture propagation, and collapse processes.
A concise technical report summarizing modeling assumptions, parameters, boundary conditions, and key findings.
Preferred Tools:
Preferred – FDEM (Finite–Discrete Element Method)
Alternative – COMSOL Multiphysics or other multiphysics tools capable of similar coupling and fracture simulation.
Required Skills:
Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Geomechanics / Rock Mechanics
Hydro–Mechanical Coupling Simulation
Stress–Strain and Fracture Analysis
Creep and Time-Dependent Deformation Modeling
COMSOL Multiphysics or FDEM Modeling
3D Simulation and Visualization
Technical Reporting
Nice to Have:
Experience with shale hydration or degradation modeling

Python or MATLAB for data post-processing
