Senior BI Architect & Coach

Specializes in Data Visualization
Clients all over the world hire me to choose, architect, design, and implement business intelligence solutions adapted to their needs and challenges. I help small businesses, start-ups, nonprofits, public administrations, and some of the largest multinationals, using a deliberate yet agile development process honed over the years. I can explain technology in a way that makes sense to business people without dumbing things down, and I can get into the technical nitty gritty with IT staff. ✔️MANAGING YOUR ENTIRE ANALYTICS PROJECT FOR SUCCESS & ADOPTION I work through all the stages of a BI project as an architect, analyst, developer, designer, administrator, and trainer: 1. Gathering your requirements and constraints 2. Defining a software and data architecture suitable for you 3. Extract, Transform, Load data (ETL), Data profiling, Data Modeling 4. Metrics Definitions & Calculations 5. Visualization 6. Administration, Deployment, Secure Sharing, Licensing, Application Lifecycle Management, Governance, Privacy 7. Training, Documentation, Hand-over, Support We can start with a proof of concept, a pilot, or develop an entire solution deployed to production. I have developed an efficient onboarding process so that we can be productive and aligned with your goals very quickly. I can also start from your existing solution to help with performance tuning, rationalizing administration, data model or visual clean-ups etc. I can provide remote or on-site training and consulting to address specific questions that don't require actual development. 🏭 WITH A FOCUS ON BUSINESS VALUE I've delivered dashboards for all major business functions, across a broad range of industries, for requirements such as: - Sales: tracking revenue and quotas with time intelligence (YTD/YoY) - Marketing: online advertising conversions - Finance: P&L, multi-currency budget vs. forecast vs. actual, A/R - HR & Operations: resource utilization, auditing, compliance, procurement, project management - Embedded reporting for SaaS, Data as a Service 📈 BI STACK: FABRIC, POWER BI, EXCEL & BEYOND I work primarily with Microsoft Fabric, including Power BI Premium, Dataflows, Datamarts, Embedded, APIs, XMLA Endpoint, PowerShell, Streaming Datasets, Report Server... I have several relevant Microsoft certifications. To start, ETL is needed to get source data in the required structure for data modeling following the Kimball methodology (star schema with fact and dimension tables). For that purpose I mostly use Power Query/M in dataflows and datasets with parameters and functions. I then create DAX measures based on your business rules. They turn raw data into the metrics you want to track and visualize. Row level security or what-if parameters are added as needed. Whenever they add value, I use a variety of advanced visuals including maps (ArcGIS, Mapbox, Icon Map), calendars, timelines, KPI gauges, scorecards, InfoRiver, Zebra BI, Deneb custom charts. I set up dashboards with hierarchies (e.g. year/quarter/month), drill up/down/through, filters/slicers, report tooltips, bookmarks, and other features to make the most of Power BI. I'm a speaker at PBI User Group meetings, a Super User in Power BI forums, and I follow everything that happens in this space very closely. I've also occasionally worked with other platforms such as Tableau, SpotFire, or Google Data Studio, so I have a good idea of the strengths and weaknesses of each solution. If you're not yet sure of what software to use, I can guide you through architectural and vendor choices. I can also migrate your existing reporting to Power BI. Since spreadsheets continue to be pervasive, I also do a lot of work with Excel, often working hand in hand with Power BI. I'm fluent in PowerPivot, pivot tables, conditional formatting, data validation, OLAP cube formulas, and "traditional" formulas (Xlookup, Index/Match, Sumifs, dynamic arrays etc.) ✔️TYING EVERYTHING TOGETHER, FROM 🗃️ to 📊 to 💲 In my experience BI works best as an extension of systems of record where most source data originates. I've acquired hands-on experience with a LOT of different software, which helps me get meaningful data out of these systems. To help data flow from source applications into the BI solution then to end users, I often use other software - e.g. SharePoint, Teams, Power Automate, Power Apps - and various Azure tools like Cognitive Services or SQL. I've used a broad array of on-premises sources with gateways as well as online data sources, using Import and/or Direct Query, including: - Relational databases and cloud datawarehouses: MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, BigQuery, Snowflake, Access - Data lakes: PBI Dataflows, Azure Data Lake Gen2 - Online tools: Smartsheet, Airtable - CRMs: Salesforce, Dynamics 365, PipeDrive - ERPs: SAP, Xero, QuickBooks - REST APIs: JSON, XML, CSV, OData
