This Is How To Build Your Profile

A freelancer’s Upwork profile is an important introduction to potential clients. It outlines your skills, reviews, badges, and more. Hear from top freelancers who’ve had success on Upwork and get their advice for creating a winning profile.

Ed: Jumping onto freelancing full time, you're your own boss. You have to push you. You have to market you. So even though you have these wonderful platforms today, you still have to do the work.

Make sure your profile is solid. Whatever, you know, platform you're using, if it's Upwork or whatever it is, make sure your profile is updated and updated with the latest things, post new things that you've been doing, and, and market, market, market.

Farah: I think a good profile on Upwork is when you are clear about what values you can give to your clients. So if it's, like, have a short, one-to-two sentence introduction about yourself, about your personality, what I do, and then, you know, just write bullet points if you're offering more than three skills. Be direct. Be warm.

Kaitlyn: How you show up behind the keyboard is really important. So if you're not spelling correctly and if you're using words that are boring and mundane, then that's gonna come across. But if you're using upbeat words that are connecting, that are inspiring, that's going to uplift somebody.

Ed: You want to be believable in what you're saying and what you're proposing in, you know, in building who you are.

Rob: Everyone has these gifts. Everyone can learn so many things online, but when their personality comes on through their description, their arts, or their creativity, I can resonate with that, and I feel like my connection's even stronger with them.

Kaitlyn: Personality speaks wonders, especially when you're literally reading everything on the internet, on Upwork, about all these different freelancers. What separates you? It's who you are. So put that in, put that in your profile and the right clients will find you.

This is How to Beef Up Your New Profile Fast

Gabrielle: If you're just starting off, you probably don't have social proof or completed jobs already on your profile. Upwork has this amazing feature where you can send automated messages to past clients that you work with outside of Upwork, or people who can speak on your behalf to give testimonials, to show people, like, yes. I am new to Upwork, but I'm not new to this.

Kaitlyn: For me to earn my clients' confidence, the big thing that I do is always show my reviews. If you're presenting something, you wanna show them a glimpse of what you do.

Gabrielle: For a favor, put a nice clear picture up there, get some social proof and testimonials from past clients, and also upload some of your work and those portfolios.

Kaitlyn: So there's a little badge that comes on your profile, and I love badges. I love getting awards, so it's like a for me, I'm like, yes. This is amazing. I didn't even know I could get it when I first started, and I was like, “what's this blue tick?” What's this blue little award on my profile? And I was like, oh, how wonderful! And then I obviously researched it, and then the next one above was top rated plus and I thought, well, I have to get that one. So it's a really cool incentive to be like, how can you really show up?
