How to Become a Freelance Researcher

Many fields of study and industries require research services. While there are a number of research fields and methodologies, most involve gathering qualitative and quantitative data in order to reach specific conclusions. If you have a natural curiosity and a desire to gather and analyze data, you may have what it takes to become a freelance researcher.

What does a freelance researcher do?

A freelance researcher is typically involved in collecting, organizing, and analyzing various forms of data and information for the purpose of solving problems, identifying opportunities, and anticipating trends. Freelance researchers may specialize in a number of areas, including science, psychology, business, and medicine.

Researchers are adept at using a variety of tools to acquire the information necessary to analyze and interpret data. Once the data is gathered and analyzed, reports are published to present the findings to sponsors of the research, including senior management, department heads, and clients.

Successful freelance researchers are capable of using multiple data gathering methods as well as demonstrating excellent time management skills, patience, problem-solving skills, and understanding of the data being uncovered.

What skills do I need to become a freelance researcher?

Although different areas of research might require slightly different skills, most skills are common across specialties. By possessing these skills, you can likely work in a number of industries for a variety of companies.

Common skills a freelance researcher should possess include:

  • Project management ability. You’ll need to plan, manage, and assign resources, as well as course correct when necessary. Possessing project management skills will ensure the research you conduct meets the objectives established.
  • Budget management. Conducting research costs money. Not only will you need to define budget needs, but you’ll also be required to manage the budget to ensure the research is comprehensive enough to meet your client’s objectives. In addition, unforeseen costs might arise, so you’ll should plan for contingencies and be prepared to request additional funding if necessary.
  • Data collection. Gathering data is a key function of freelance researchers. Without data, there is no research project and, as a result, no analysis and conclusions. Researchers can collect data in a variety of ways. Collecting quantitative data through surveys, gathering qualitative data through interviews, finding existing data, and compiling that information are among the primary responsibilities of researchers.
  • Data analysis. Once your data is collected, you’ll need to review and analyze the data to determine what it says. The results of your analysis should identify trends, uncover opportunities, offer insight, and tell a story that, without the research, would have remained hidden. Data analysis helps organizations and consultants make important business decisions and ensure resources are spent intelligently.
  • Report writing. Writing and submitting reports are often the final steps of research projects. A freelance researcher should be able to effectively write reports that present research findings as well as make recommendations. Organizational decisions are often made based on reports that result from high-quality research projects.
  • Critical thinking. Freelance researchers must possess critical thinking and analytical skills. A good portion of research involves problem-solving and anticipating the kind of data a client may need. When considering client objectives, a capable researcher will view the requirements from many angles and a variety of lenses. This helps the researcher develop a comprehensive project plan that addresses most or all client concerns.
  • Questionnaire development. When collecting quantitative and qualitative data, developing a comprehensive questionnaire that asks the important questions—often in a variety of ways—will capture the necessary data that results in valuable analysis and reports. A freelance researcher will be able to configure a survey that maximizes data gathering while minimizing participant fatigue.
  • Interviewing. When conducting qualitative research, freelance researchers must be adept at asking questions designed to retrieve the most important information from their subjects. The key to leveraging this skill is to put the subject at ease while also gathering as much information as possible during the interview.
  • The ability to work within a team. Most research projects require multiple participants. Like many other projects, research initiatives are successful if the parties involved can work well together. As a freelancer who may be leading the project, it’s important for you to set the tone while demonstrating open communication, attention to detail, respect, understanding, empathy, and encouragement.
  • Communication skills. Communicating effectively is one of the most important components of any project involving multiple participants, clients, and stakeholders. Being able to articulate a position, whether verbally or in writing, while also listening and considering another’s point of view goes a long way in maximizing cooperation and minimizing animosity in a team environment.

What are the core freelance researcher job responsibilities?

A freelance researcher will normally be responsible for a variety of duties when working on a project for a client. While it’s true that clients and projects differ, there are core responsibilities freelance researchers should anticipate handling when taking on new projects.

Core duties freelance researchers will be responsible for include:

  • Identifying key research target audiences from which information and data can be gathered
  • Developing questionnaires designed to ask multiple questions in several ways in order to retrieve accurate information
  • Overseeing the budget for each research project, including selecting online survey tools, incentivizing participants, and leveraging report-writing tools.
  • Maintaining research vendor relationships across multiple departments and projects
  • Writing extensive reports identifying key findings and distributing them to key stakeholders and senior management
  • Collaborate with marketing and project development teams when developing questionnaires
  • Configure interactive dashboards and automated report distribution for each research project.

Should I get a degree or certification to become a freelance researcher?

In addition to developing your skills, obtaining a bachelor’s degree and/or professional certification can help your Upwork profile stand out. While a certification is not required for most research opportunities, having a formal education is necessary to be considered for corporate-level research projects.
