How to Become a Freelance Dropshipper
Dropshippers sell products online but don’t own or carry inventory. Instead, they fulfill orders by purchasing items from a third-party supplier—usually a wholesaler or manufacturer—and having them shipped directly to the customer. This lets dropshippers maintain lean profit margins without the cost of storing inventory. Alibaba is a common site through which dropshippers source items.
But dropshipping businesses have many tasks to effectively reach sales goals. As they establish their businesses or as their companies grow, they may need to outsource tasks that are either outside their skillset, have become too time consuming or require special expertise. Freelance dropshippers on sites like Upwork have ecommerce business experience and specialize in specific marketing tasks, building sales platforms, logistics, customer service or product sourcing.
What does a dropship business do?
Dropshippers are not typical online merchants. The model allows an eCommerce entrepreneur to start an online business without the capital expenditures—inventory and distribution—required to operate a typical retail outlet. But presenting, marketing and conducting the logistics of finding products and serving customers can be challenging.
The dropshipper profits from a difference in their published prices and those of the businesses that stock and ship the items, even if those businesses created them. Sometimes dropshipping suppliers provide services such as printing the dropshipper’s information or logo on shipping labels and white-label products, and placing brand-specific marketing materials in the packages.
Dropshipping has increased dramatically as companies opt to focus on their core business while outsourcing the logistical burden of marketing and selling their goods directly. You can also start a more basic dropshipping business by selling items on marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, and Etsy, or building an eCommerce website utilizing an eCommerce platform such as Shopify, Wix, or WooCommerce.
What skills do I need to become a freelance dropshipper?
Core creative and technical skills that a dropshipper needs but might farm out to freelancers well-versed in eCommerce include product description copywriting, affiliate marketing, blogging/article writing, customer support, content management software (CMS) implementation, email marketing, search engine optimization (SEO) and basic SaaS integration principles.
Dropshippers often opt for a platform like Upwork to hire experts in these different areas. For example, a digital marketing expert can assist with market research, develop a social media marketing strategy, and kick start your SEO program to help optimize your website for search engines.
Product experts might find new products that suit your site or have the knowledge and connections to better source the products you have. A freelancer might specialize in setting up a Shopify store for a dropshipper and incorporate the Oberlo app that helps import products from AliExpress.
The supplementary skills below are essential in the dropshipping business model.
- Seamlessly integrate and coordinate with dropshipping suppliers to fulfill orders
- Work with warehouses to ensure an adequate supply of products are available at all times
- Effectively manage a large inventory of products
- Provide timely and accurate order fulfillment to customers
- Communicate with customers and suppliers to solve problems
- Maintain and improve internal systems to ensure an efficient customer experience
What are the work responsibilities of freelance dropshippers?
Dropshippers are responsible for creating ecommerce stores that host product listings and/or finding the best marketplaces on which to sell your products. They must ensure orders and payments are delivered in a timely fashion, monitor shipping timelines, source and list new products, forecast and demand plan, and many other tasks.
A standard day in the life of a dropshipper may include reviewing clients’ sites to ensure all of the new product listing information has been transferred correctly, updating the .CSV file for another client’s upcoming launch, and reaching out to online stores that they could help improve.
Here are some of the responsibilities for dropshippers:
- Communicate with suppliers to coordinate orders and deliveries
- Pack and ship orders to customers when necessary
- Dispatch orders from dropshipping warehouses as-needed
- Collaborate with suppliers to resolve billing issues
- Cooperate with suppliers on order fulfillment issues as-needed
- Ensure the quality of products and converse with suppliers in the event of a recall or defective product
- Coordinate with suppliers regarding any product launch issues
- Communicate with suppliers regarding product samples and limited-time promotions
- Obtain sample products for quality controls on all listed product types
- Random sample to ensure quality controls on packing and shipping
- Coordinate with suppliers on new product launches
- Coordinate with suppliers regarding seasonal products
- Coordinate with suppliers on forecasts and demand planning
- Coordinate with suppliers regarding dropshipping store changes
- Coordinate with suppliers on order-to-cash processes
- Communicate with customers via phone, email, or website online chat
- Communicate with suppliers via phone, email, or online
