Board Game Designer for Themed Trivia / Exploration Game
Worldwide
I’m the founder of Acktual Local, a new Nantucket-inspired lifestyle brand, and I’m looking for an experienced board game designer to help develop an original Nantucket-themed game concept into a fun, commercially viable physical board game. The working concept is called “Are You an Acktual Local?” Players would move through Nantucket and answer questions, complete challenges, or encounter different experiences related to the island—its history, landmarks, traditions, culture and local knowledge. The idea is that as players progress, they discover how well they really know Nantucket. At the end of the game, players could fall into different Nantucket-inspired categories based on their knowledge or progress—for example, someone relatively new to the island versus a seasonal resident or someone with deep local knowledge. I have the overall concept and brand direction, but the game mechanics have not been fully developed yet, which is why I am specifically looking for someone with real board-game development experience. I would like help with: Developing the core gameplay and rules Determining how players move/progress through the game Developing the trivia/question/challenge structure Creating a scoring or progression system Determining player outcomes/categories Balancing strategy, knowledge, luck and replayability Creating an initial playable prototype Refining the game through playtesting Ultimately helping determine the components needed for production (board, cards, pieces/tokens, instructions, box, etc.) The game should be fun and accessible for both Nantucket visitors and people who know the island extremely well. I don't want it to feel like a generic trivia game with Nantucket questions added to it—the location and experience of Nantucket should be integral to the gameplay. Visually, Acktual Local is elevated, understated, nostalgic and coastal rather than traditional souvenir merchandise. The eventual game should feel beautiful enough that someone would want to leave it out on a coffee table, while still being genuinely fun to play. For this first phase, game development and mechanics are more important to me than finished illustration. If you also have strong graphic design/illustration and board-game production experience, that's a plus, but it is not essential if you are particularly strong in game development. Please include examples of physical board or card games you have helped develop, and explain what part of the game you were responsible for—especially if you were involved in mechanics, rules, prototyping or playtesting rather than visual design alone. I’m looking for someone collaborative who can take an early concept and help turn it into a game that actually works.
