Research/Data Entry/Data Transcription History/ Architecture Project

Background: I'm looking for help on doing some historical research for a passion project (journal article/research paper). What this will mainly involve in terms of work is just pouring through hundreds of digitized images/pdfs from American newspaper articles, magazine pages, property records, microfilm from over a hundred years ago, etc. and extracting some pieces of data (who what when here type data). and putting that into a tabulated format and sending that over. Together, we'll investigate a story I'm chasing down and wanting to write about. If you're a history nerd, you'll find this fun. If not, please don't bother applying. Scope: (1) I send you a link/links (2) show you how to navigate the website, show you the data I'm looking for, (3) you populate a spreadsheet and then send it over, I'll populate it/build on that, and we'll build the database together. potentially also (4): chase ad-hoc research leads depending on your skill/experience. The old documents have mixed OCR results, meaning you can copy the text and search the database, so you won't be typing out every single thing, but you'll need to correct it very often for accurate results. Project Start/Duration: Project can start as soon as October 4th 2026 - latest it could go is October 31st 2026. Duration - Minimum 25 hours maximum 50 hours depending on your rate. I could take it all in 2 weeks, or spread it out in ~4 weeks. High likelihood for extension if the work quality is good.. Also, it would be great to work with someone who has experience with data/research before. I'd like to be confident after I explain to you - you know what it is I'm looking for - such that if you come across an interesting image, map, diagram, even research lead that you know I would be interested in you'd send it over. Regarding AI use, you can but I caution the degree to which you lean on it since I don't think it's possible to fully automate this workflow. I've worked in software engineering and use AI for work before, I'm not sure using Claude or ChatGPT or other tools will be of help for two reasons: (1) its a public resource and if they detect some mining they might shut it down for everyone. (2) I've tried it. The scans are a bit damaged so the extent to which Claude can parse it is mixed. Personally, I didn't like the quality when I spot checked. Now I could be wrong, if so great, but I'll be checking your work sporadically and if its AI slop/poor quality, we're done. You'll also need to describe what you're planning to do to me if you go this route. Other thing is if you'd like this work, send over something from your prior experiences (not just statistics), if your work wasn't published/publicly available just describe it in a few sentences so I can gauge your familiarity with research/data. If you're trying to get your first job and have no experience, feel free to write in with your favorite building and something interesting you discovered about it through in-depth research.
