Advanced UAV Concept Development

I am assembling a small, highly capable freelance team to support the development of a portfolio of original UAV and drone concepts progressing from **concept design into credible engineering, CAD, simulation and ultimately prototype development**. This is not simply a visualisation project. I am looking for designers and engineers who can take an unconventional idea, understand the intended operating principle, challenge it intelligently and help determine **how it could actually be engineered and built**. The projects explore different approaches to UAV architecture, propulsion, aerodynamics, endurance, deployment, payload integration, autonomous operation and specialist applications. Some are relatively compact product-development challenges; others involve more ambitious aircraft architectures. Because several concepts involve proprietary IP, detailed technical information will only be shared with selected candidates following an NDA. ## Who I am looking for I am particularly interested in freelancers with expertise in one or more of the following areas: * **UAV / aerospace engineering** * **Aerodynamics and flight dynamics** * **Mechanical and electromechanical engineering** * **Drone propulsion systems** * **Electric motors, ESCs, batteries and power systems** * **Airframe and structural design** * **CAD development — Fusion 360, SolidWorks, CATIA or equivalent** * **CFD / FEA / engineering simulation** * **Flight-control architecture and autopilot systems** * **Embedded electronics and sensor integration** * **Autonomous systems, navigation and communications** * **Rapid prototyping and design for manufacture** * **Industrial/product design with genuine engineering experience** I am **not necessarily looking for one person who can do everything**. My intention is to build a small multidisciplinary network of specialists who can be brought together around individual projects. ## The kind of person I want to work with The strongest candidates will be comfortable working at the point where **invention meets engineering**. You should be able to look beyond an existing drone configuration rather than automatically forcing every idea into a conventional quadcopter architecture. Equally importantly, I want people prepared to challenge assumptions. If a concept needs modification because of aerodynamic, structural, thermal, electrical or manufacturing constraints, I want you to identify the problem and help find a better solution. I value people who can say: **“The principle is interesting. Here is what works, here is what does not yet work, and here is how we could engineer it properly.”** rather than simply producing attractive CAD around an idea. ## Typical development work Depending on your specialism, assignments could include: * reviewing an initial UAV concept and assessing technical feasibility; * developing engineering architecture from sketches and concept drawings; * creating properly dimensioned parametric CAD; * defining internal component layouts; * estimating mass, thrust, power and endurance; * aerodynamic analysis and CFD; * structural analysis and material selection; * propulsion and battery sizing; * flight-control and electronics architecture; * developing prototype specifications; * identifying suitable off-the-shelf components; * preparing models for fabrication or additive manufacturing; * supporting bench testing and eventual flight prototypes. Projects will generally begin with a defined piece of development work rather than an open-ended engagement. Strong collaborators may then become part of the wider development team as projects progress. ## When applying Please do **not** send a generic engineering proposal. Instead, briefly tell me: 1. Your particular area of UAV/drone expertise. 2. Which parts of the development process you are strongest in. 3. Examples of aircraft, UAV, robotics or similarly complex products you have actually helped engineer. 4. The CAD, simulation or engineering tools you use. 5. Whether you have experience taking a project from concept toward a physical prototype. 6. Which role you believe you would play within a small multidisciplinary UAV development team. I am especially interested in engineers and designers who enjoy **early-stage technology development, unconventional engineering problems and turning ambitious concepts into technically defensible products**. This is intended to become an ongoing development programme rather than a single isolated design commission. UK/EU based preferred or willingness to travel or relocate for duration.
