Australian Media & Journalist Researcher - National PR Campaign
Worldwide
We are looking for an experienced media researcher / PR researcher to help us build a highly targeted journalist contact database for a national Australian campaign. We have already done the initial research and identified more than 200 relevant media outlets, including newspapers, radio stations, television newsrooms, digital publications and community media. We will provide this database to you. Your job is to go one level deeper and identify the best actual journalist, producer, editor or media contact to pitch at each relevant outlet. WHAT WE NEED For each media outlet in our database, we want you to identify the person most likely to cover a positive local human-interest story. Depending on the outlet, this could be: Local journalist Community reporter Features journalist News reporter News editor Chief of staff Assignment editor Breakfast producer Mornings producer Drive producer Executive producer Radio news director TV reporter Digital editor We do not simply want generic newsroom email addresses where a better individual contact can reasonably be found. The question we want you to answer for every outlet is: “If you had one opportunity to pitch this story to this outlet, who would you contact first?” INFORMATION REQUIRED For each contact, we would ideally like: Media outlet Journalist/producer name Current job title Direct email address Phone number where publicly available LinkedIn profile Professional social media profile where relevant Location/region they cover Areas or rounds they regularly report on Link to their journalist/profile page Links to 1–3 recent relevant stories Short explanation of why they are the right person to pitch Confidence rating: High / Medium / Low Backup contact where possible All information needs to be current and verified. LOCATIONS Our finalists are located across: Perth, WA Hobart, TAS Adelaide, SA Bundaberg, QLD Melbourne, VIC Penrith / Jamisontown, NSW Brisbane, QLD Mount Beauty, VIC Kiama, NSW Heathmont / Maroondah, VIC Mildura, VIC Townsville, QLD Doomadgee / Gulf Country, QLD Regional and hyperlocal media are particularly important to this project. WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR Ideally, you will have experience in: Public relations Media relations Journalism Australian media Journalist research Media databases Communications research Experience using tools such as Meltwater, Muck Rack, Telum, Medianet, LinkedIn, Hunter or similar platforms would be useful. Knowledge of the Australian media landscape would be highly regarded. IMPORTANT: THIS IS NOT BASIC LEAD GENERATION We are not looking for someone to scrape hundreds of generic email addresses. Quality is significantly more important than quantity. For example, rather than giving us: ABC North Queensland Generic contact email We want: Jane Smith Reporter, ABC North Queensland Covers Townsville community and human-interest stories Verified contact information Links to recent relevant stories Reason: Strong journalist to approach with this particular finalist’s story. For radio, the best person may be the producer responsible for booking guests rather than the presenter. For television, it may be the chief of staff, assignment desk or a particular reporter. We need someone who understands these differences and can make intelligent recommendations. DELIVERABLE We will provide you with our existing spreadsheet containing the outlets and organisations we have already identified. You will research and expand this database with the best individual media contacts. For our highest-priority media outlets, we would ideally like both a primary and secondary contact. The final database needs to be ready for our PR team to begin personalised outreach immediately. DEADLINE This is a time-sensitive project. Please tell us when you can start, how quickly you can complete the research and approximately how many hours you expect the project to require. TO APPLY Please start your application with the words: LOCAL HERO Then briefly answer: What experience do you have researching Australian journalists or media contacts? What tools or methods would you use to identify the best journalist or producer at each outlet? How would you verify that the journalist still works at the outlet and their information is current? If we gave you a regional Australian radio station, how would you determine whether we should approach a journalist, presenter, producer or news director? Please also provide an example of a similar media research or PR database project you have completed. We are looking for someone who can think like a PR professional, not simply collect contact information.
