Summary

Book Interior Designer / Typesetter for 180,000-Word Literary Memoir — Paid Sample Stage I am looking for an experienced book interior designer / typesetter to develop the interior design and page layout for an approximately 180,000-word literary/spiritual memoir intended for professional publication. The manuscript is complete and contains extensive footnotes, along with a variety of recurring textual elements. This is not an editing or proofreading job. I am looking for someone with a strong understanding of traditional book typography and long-form publishing who can help determine how the finished book should actually look and read on the page. The aim is an interior that is elegant, understated, highly readable, and appropriate for a serious trade publication—not something heavily designed or decorative. Scope of the Work The work will involve developing a complete typographic and page-design system, including decisions concerning: Typeface and, where appropriate, font pairing Body-text size Leading / line spacing Character and word spacing where appropriate Line length and overall readability Paragraph indentation and spacing Trim size and page proportions Text-block dimensions Inner, outer, top, and bottom margins Headers, footers, running heads, and page numbering Chapter and section openings Heading and subheading hierarchy Treatment of quotations, letters, journal entries, dates, and other recurring textual elements Extensive footnotes and their relationship to the main text Widows, orphans, awkward page breaks, and excessive white space Overall consistency, balance, and visual rhythm throughout a long manuscript Preparation of a professional, print-ready interior Because the manuscript contains substantial footnoting, I am particularly interested in someone who knows how to integrate footnotes elegantly without allowing them to overwhelm the page or unnecessarily interrupt the flow of the narrative. A Collaborative Design Process An important part of the engagement will be consultative. I am not simply looking for someone to import the manuscript into InDesign and apply a standard book template. I would like to work with a designer who can make informed recommendations concerning trim size, typeface, type size, leading, margins, line length, page architecture, footnote treatment, and overall typographic character. I am interested in the reasoning behind those recommendations and would welcome a designer who is comfortable discussing why particular choices are appropriate for this manuscript. Paid Sample Stage Before committing to the complete 180,000-word manuscript, I intend to shortlist a small number of suitable designers and commission a paid sample layout from each, using the same representative selection from the manuscript. This is not a request for unpaid speculative work. Shortlisted designers will be paid for the sample. The sample material will include several different types of pages, such as: Standard narrative prose A chapter opening Pages with light footnoting Pages with extensive footnoting Section breaks and other recurring textual elements I would like each shortlisted designer to use this material to propose an appropriate: Trim size Typeface Body-text size and leading Text-block dimensions Margin system Chapter-opening treatment Running heads and folios Footnote design Overall page architecture The purpose of this stage is to establish the design direction and identify the designer whose typographic judgment, aesthetic sensibility, and approach to long-form readability are the best fit for the book. The selected designer will then be considered for the complete interior design and typesetting of the approximately 180,000-word manuscript. Ideal Freelancer You should have demonstrable experience in professional book typography, interior book design, and typesetting, preferably involving memoir, literary nonfiction, biography, academic or scholarly publishing, or other substantial text-heavy books. Experience working with long manuscripts containing extensive footnotes is particularly desirable. Please provide examples of actual book interiors you have personally designed and typeset, rather than primarily covers or general graphic-design work. I am especially interested in seeing examples of: Standard long-form prose pages Chapter-opening spreads Sophisticated but restrained literary typography Pages containing substantial footnotes Complex long-form book interiors Experience preparing interiors for professional printing, offset printing, print-on-demand, and/or major publishing platforms would also be valuable. Adobe InDesign experience is strongly preferred. When Applying Please include: A brief description of your experience with book interior design and typesetting. Examples of comparable book interiors you have personally designed. Examples involving footnotes or other complex long-form typography, if available. The software you normally use for professional book production. A brief explanation of how you approach establishing the typography and page architecture for a long-form memoir. Your usual process for moving from an approved design sample to typesetting and delivering a complete book. Please do not create an unpaid sample as part of your application. I will select a small number of promising candidates based on their portfolios and experience and invite them separately to participate in the paid sample stage. I am looking for a designer who regards typography not simply as formatting, but as an integral part of the reading experience.
