California Sweepstakes & Gaming Law Attorney - Subscription Rewards Legal Review
Worldwide
I am building an early-stage consumer subscription platform and looking for a U.S.-licensed attorney with experience in California sweepstakes, promotions, gaming/gambling, or related regulatory law. Scope I need a focused preliminary legal review of a proposed subscription-based community rewards model. The primary questions are: 1. Whether the proposed subscription + reward structure could be classified as a lottery, sweepstakes, gambling, or another regulated activity under California law. 2. Whether requiring a paid subscription creates a consideration issue. 3. Whether a free alternative method of participation (AMOE) may be required. 4. Whether cash vs. non-cash/community benefits changes the analysis. 5. What minimum structural changes would make an MVP safer to launch. Deliverable 1. A concise written assessment with practical recommendations. This is an early feasibility review - I am not requesting a lengthy legal memorandum, Terms of Service, contract drafting, or a 50-state analysis. I will provide the selected attorney with a short document explaining the product and proposed mechanics. Ideal Background * U.S.-licensed attorney; California Bar preferred * Sweepstakes / contests / promotions law * Gaming or gambling regulatory law * Consumer technology or subscription products * Experience advising startups is a plus This is a small, fixed-price initial project. If the product moves forward and there is a good fit, there may be additional legal work later. When applying, please briefly mention any prior experience advising on sweepstakes, contests, subscription rewards, gaming, or similar consumer products. Budget & Potential Ongoing Work The posted fixed price is specifically for this initial, limited legal review. If the preliminary review can be completed with one discussion and a concise recommendation, we expect this to remain a small engagement. However, if the attorney identifies issues that require additional discussions, product-structure changes, or further legal work as the project develops, I am to discussing a separate scope and budget for ongoing work. My goal with this first engagement is to determine whether the proposed model is viable and what changes, if any, should be made before proceeding further. When applying, please briefly mention any prior experience advising on sweepstakes, contests, subscription rewards, gaming, or similar consumer products.
