Copy Editor Needed for 30,000 Word Personal Growth/Inspirational Nonfiction Book
Worldwide
I'm seeking an experienced nonfiction book editor to copyedit a completed manuscript of approx. 30,000 words. Be the Hope is a warm, reflective exploration of hope as something we can actively practice and cultivate in our lives. The book combines personal stories, psychological research, practical reflection, and themes of resilience, connection, possibility, and personal growth. The manuscript has already undergone substantial developmental and line revision, as well as a final author read-through. I'm not looking for developmental editing or significant rewriting at this stage. I'm looking for a thoughtful, experienced copy editor who can help prepare the manuscript for publication while preserving its existing voice. What I need: Please review the manuscript for: - grammar, punctuation, spelling, syntax and usage - clarity and readability - consistency in capitalization, terminology, headings, and formatting - accidental repetition of words, phrases, ideas, or examples - awkward or unclear sentences - consistency of citations and research references - obvious factual claims that should be queried or verified - light line-level suggestions where clarity or flow would benefit - flag any places where the manuscript feels underdeveloped or where a reader may need more context Preserving the author's voice is extremely important to me. The writing is intentionally warm, relational, reflective, and conversational. I occasionally use short sentences, fragments, repetition, and rhythm intentionally. I would prefer an editor who queries or suggests rather than automatically rewriting stylistic choices. Deliverables: I would like to receive: - the complete manuscript edited in Microsoft Word using Track Changes - comments or queries where author judgement is needed - a copyediting style sheet documenting manuscript-specific editorial decisions and conventions - a brief summary of any recurring issues or recommendations you notice Skills/Experience: The ideal editor will have: - Professional copyediting experience with book-length nonfiction - experience with personal development, inspirational nonfiction, psychology, memoir-adjacent nonfiction, or similar genre - strong command of American English - familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style - experience maintaining an author's distinctive voice while improving consistency and clarity The book is intended primarily for a US audience and uses American English Working Together I value collaborative editing. When something is clearly incorrect, please correct it. When a change is subjective or could meaningfully alter voice or meaning, I'd prefer a comment or query so I can make the final decision. Please include in your proposal: 1. Your experience editing book-length nonfiction and the genres you most frequently work with 2. Examples of published book you've edited, if available 3. How you approach preserving author voice during editing 4. Whether you provide an editorial style sheet 5. Your estimated turnaround time for approx. 30,000 words 6. Whether the quote includes a brief cleanup/second pass after I review the edits I'm also like to begin with a paid sample edit of approximately 1000-1500 words before committing to the full manuscript. I'm happy to pay your normal rate for the sample.
