Summary

QUIET DESK - EDITOR'S GUIDE Campaign: Mark Pinsley for State Senate Format: 15 seconds. This is the only version. No 30-second cut needed. Concept: Contrast structure - loud, chaotic America vs. Mark's quiet, focused work. Minimal to no voice-over. Sound design carries the emotion. Silence is used as a tool, not a gap. The ad also needs to read as "loud" visually, not just through sound, since a lot of viewers will have their sound off. ------------------------------------------------------------ THE HIGHLIGHT / CORE IDEA High level: this is a 15-second political ad that opens on loud, chaotic clips of American political anger, then hard-cuts to total silence on Mark Pinsley quietly working at his desk. It repeats that loud/quiet pattern a couple of times, then ends on a tag card with his name and message. There is little to no voice-over. The whole ad is built to make one point without saying it out loud: everyone else is adding to the noise, Mark is just doing his job. Now the details: This ad works entirely on contrast. The loud clips should feel like real, unfiltered American political anger - shouting, crowds, sirens. Then we cut HARD to true silence on Mark, working quietly and competently. The silence is the message: while everyone else is adding to the noise, Mark is doing his job. Most important instruction: do not fade or crossfade between chaos and silence. Every transition from loud to quiet must be an abrupt, jarring hard cut, like someone hit mute. That whiplash is what makes the ad land. If it feels smooth, it is not working. No voice-over runs under the chaos or the quiet sections. If we use any VO at all, it appears only in the final 2-3 seconds, on the tag line. ------------------------------------------------------------ STEP 1: SOURCE THE CHAOS CLIPS Find a few short clips (1-2 seconds each, usable) showing genuine anger and loud disorder in the US - crowds shouting, protest chants (example: "shut it down"), sirens, confrontation. These should feel raw and real, not staged-looking stock footage. ------------------------------------------------------------ STEP 2: MAKE IT READ AS LOUD EVEN WITH NO SOUND A lot of people will scroll past this with the sound muted, so the chaos needs to be visually loud too, not just audibly loud. Some ways to do this, pick what works best once you see the cut: - Quick white flash/strobe bursts between chaos clips, almost like a camera flash, to create a jarring, aggressive rhythm - Fast, hard jump cuts between clips (no smooth transitions) during the chaos sections - Slight camera shake or handheld jitter on the chaos clips - Quick zoom punches into the chaos footage on each cut - Optional: a glitch/static flicker treatment on 1-2 of the chaos clips Then when we hard cut to Mark, everything stops. No flash, no shake, no zoom. Static, still, calm frame. That stillness needs to feel like a relief after the visual noise, the same way the silence feels like a relief after the sound. ------------------------------------------------------------ STEP 3: INTERCUT CHAOS WITH SILENCE Structure is loud/quiet/loud/quiet, not one long chaos montage followed by one long quiet section. Even at 15 seconds, we want at least 2 full cycles of noise into silence. Keep each chaos burst short, never more than 1-2 seconds, so it does not overstay its welcome. ------------------------------------------------------------ STEP 4: SOUND DESIGN UNDER THE CHAOS CLIPS For the underlying sound bed during the chaos spots, we want a tension/dread quality similar to the sound design in this reference, not the visuals, just the way sound is used to build unease before a sudden quiet: Reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPY7J-flzE8 (A Quiet Place: Day One trailer) Listen to how it uses low rumble, distorted ambient noise, and sudden silence rather than a music track. That is the texture we want under our chaos clips. Not upbeat, not scored like a typical political ad, closer to unsettling ambient tension. ------------------------------------------------------------ STEP 5: ORIGINAL MARK FOOTAGE - PLACEHOLDER NOW, FINAL FOOTAGE LATER I have the original footage of Mark and will insert it later. Please cut these placeholder timestamps into the sequence now so we can lock pacing, and I will drop in final files before delivery. Do not source stock replacements for these, they need to be Mark himself. Reference clip (mine): https://vimeo.com/1214728102/ced87b8c0f Timestamps to use: 0:05 - Mark at desk - use for opening "quiet" beat 0:13 - Mark looking in filing cabinet - use for mid "quiet" beat, working/ searching 0:19 - Mark with briefcase - use for closing beat / exit ------------------------------------------------------------ STEP 6: END CARD leave space ------------------------------------------------------------ DELIVERABLES NEEDED FROM YOU 1. First rough cut with placeholder Mark footage and temp chaos clips, for pacing review 2. Confirm sourcing/clearance status of any chaos clips before we lock 3. Final 15-second export once I have sent final Mark footage with original video files for editing 4 music Everything should be royalty-free Please provide any insights and examples of similar work, also give a quote and a time frame
