Data Scientist – GenAI/RAG Solutions (Freelance, Remote w/ occasional Munich on-site)

We're looking for an experienced Data Scientist / AI Consultant to join a GenAI initiative building a knowledge-retrieval and conversational AI solution for an energy-sector client. The project involves close collaboration with business and IT stakeholders, hands-on RAG architecture design, and integration with existing conversational AI platforms. Responsibilities: Lead technical requirements engineering in close collaboration with business and IT stakeholders Design and implement the technical architecture for GenAI-based knowledge retrieval Build and iterate on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) components Build an evaluation pipeline to assess response quality and search/retrieval performance Support integration with existing dialog/conversational AI platforms (e.g., Cognigy) and related AI services Collaborate with international stakeholders across business, IT, and conversational AI teams Requirements: Strong hands-on experience with LLMs and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Proven experience in requirements analysis and technical solution design Experience with AI evaluation/benchmarking methodologies Experience with knowledge retrieval systems Azure + Databricks experience required Fluent in German and English (project language is both) Nice to have: Experience with document analysis and knowledge extraction Experience with chatbot/dialog AI solutions Prior experience in the energy or insurance sector Engagement details: Start: August 24, 2026 Duration: through December 31, 2026 Scope: ~90 person-days Location: Remote, with occasional on-site days in Munich
