Experienced 2D animator/animation studio to create a cinematic, story-driven 2D animated short

The animation should have a high-quality anime-inspired illustrated look, combining expressive character animation with richly painted environments and cinematic camera composition. Visual Style The overall visual direction should be: - High-quality 2D hand-drawn/illustrated animation - Anime-inspired character design and visual storytelling - Clean, expressive African characters with natural proportions - Detailed, painterly backgrounds rather than flat-colored backgrounds - Lush tropical/African outdoor environments with trees, grass, dirt paths, vegetation and open fields - Strong use of natural sunlight, shadows, highlights and atmospheric depth - Vibrant but natural colors - Soft, polished cinematic lighting - Detailed environmental elements that make each location feel alive - A warm, adventurous and emotionally engaging visual atmosphere The final result should feel like a professionally produced animated film, not a basic explainer video, slideshow, motion graphic, or puppet animation. Character Animation Characters should be fully animated and expressive. I need: - Natural walking and running - Realistic body movement - Hand and arm gestures - Facial expressions and reactions - Natural head and eye movement - Interaction between multiple characters - Sports/action movements where required - Character movement that feels fluid rather than mechanical - Consistent character appearance from scene to scene Characters should be integrated naturally into their environments with correct perspective, lighting and shadows. Environments The backgrounds should receive significant attention. Create detailed environments such as: - Rural residential surroundings - Houses and outdoor structures - Tropical vegetation - Grasslands/open fields - Dirt pathways - Sports/play areas - Trees and dense greenery - Wooden structures/platforms - Outdoor community environments Backgrounds should not look static or empty. Add subtle environmental movement where appropriate, such as moving vegetation, atmospheric motion and other small details. Cinematic Camera Work The animation should use cinematic camera direction, including: - Wide establishing shots - Medium character shots - Close-ups - Over-the-shoulder compositions - Tracking/panning shots - Slow camera movement - Push-ins/zoom-ins when appropriate - High-angle or aerial establishing shots where needed - Smooth transitions between compositions The camera should help tell the story rather than simply remaining fixed on the characters. Storytelling & Timing The animation must be built around the supplied story/script/audio. Every scene should visually communicate what is happening in the narration. Character actions, expressions, camera movements and scene changes should be carefully synchronized with the dialogue/audio. The pacing should feel like a short animated film, with appropriate changes between establishing shots, character interactions, action sequences and emotional moments. Animation Quality I am specifically looking for: Frame-by-frame or high-quality 2D character animation combined with detailed illustrated backgrounds and cinematic compositing. I do NOT want: - A slideshow of illustrations - Static characters moving across backgrounds - Basic PowerPoint-style animation - Generic motion graphics - AI-generated images simply edited together - Cheap-looking puppet animation - Characters with stiff or robotic movements The animation needs to feel like a cohesive 2D animated production. Audio & Final Production The supplied audio/dialogue should drive the timing of the animation. The final video should include: - Accurate dialogue/action synchronization - Appropriate sound effects - Clean audio mixing - Proper scene transitions - Cinematic compositing - High-resolution final rendering Freelancer Requirements Please apply only if you have experience producing cinematic 2D character animation, particularly animation involving: 1. Detailed illustrated environments 2. Character acting and expressions 3. Multiple characters interacting 4. Cinematic camera movements 5. Storytelling synchronized to dialogue/audio 6. African characters/environments or similar culturally authentic settings Please provide 2–3 examples of your closest work. I am particularly interested in seeing examples where you created the characters, environments, animation and final compositing rather than simply editing pre-existing assets. Important Before beginning the full production, I would like the animator to produce a short sample scene demonstrating the proposed character design, background quality, animation quality, lighting and overall visual direction. The sample will be used to confirm that we are aligned on the animation quality and visual approach before proceeding with the complete video. If the quality and collaboration are successful, there is potential for ongoing animation work.
