About the Role We are seeking a Head of Science and Grants to provide functional leadership across our scientific research, grant development, and evidence based program work. This role is part of the intermediate leadership structure being established across the organization. The successful candidate will lead the Science and Grants function, oversee scientific writers, researchers, and other contributors, and ensure work progresses without requiring executive leadership to manage every detail. This person will serve as the scientific quality review layer before work reaches executive leadership. They will review grant applications, manuscripts, research reports, methodologies, statistical analyses, and scientific evidence. They will provide clear direction and constructive feedback, ensure required revisions are completed, and help the team improve the quality and consistency of its work. The Head of Science and Grants will also represent the function in relevant meetings, provide clear updates, raise risks, identify decisions needed, and ensure agreed actions are completed. Responsibilities • Lead the Science and Grants function and provide direction to scientific writers, researchers, and other contributors. • Translate company priorities into clear scientific, research, and grant deliverables. • Assign and clarify responsibilities, expectations, priorities, and deadlines. • Oversee the development of grant applications, scientific manuscripts, research reports, analyses, and supporting documents. • Monitor progress across scientific and grant projects and address risks or delays early. • Review work completed by scientific writers and researchers before it reaches executive leadership. • Provide detailed and constructive feedback and ensure required revisions are completed. • Review grant proposals before submission. • Review scientific manuscripts, research reports, analyses, and other scientific documents. • Evaluate research methodology, study design, statistical analyses, and the interpretation of findings. • Review the quality and relevance of evidence supporting product and program development. • Ensure scientific claims are accurate, properly supported, and communicated responsibly. • Maintain scientific quality and consistency across all deliverables. • Coordinate scientific work with Programs and Product to ensure program decisions are supported by appropriate evidence. • Attend relevant Science and Grants, Programs and Product, and leadership meetings. • Present clear updates on progress, priorities, deadlines, risks, and decisions required. • Follow up on meeting decisions and ensure assigned actions are completed. • Create SOPs, templates, review frameworks, and scientific quality standards. • Improve research workflows, documentation, delegation, and review processes. • Identify recurring quality or process issues and implement scalable improvements. • Build a functional structure that allows scientific work to progress without unnecessary executive involvement. • Reduce executive review time by ensuring work is complete, accurate, and properly reviewed before submission. What We’re Looking For Required • PhD in Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Behavioral Science, Neuroscience, Public Health, or a closely related field. • Strong experience in research methodology, study design, and statistics. • Experience reviewing scientific writing, research reports, manuscripts, or similar deliverables. • Experience with grant writing or grant review. • Experience overseeing, coordinating, or developing scientific writers and researchers. • Strong scientific judgment and attention to detail. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Ability to provide clear, thoughtful, and constructive feedback. • Strong leadership, project oversight, and follow through. • Ability to manage several priorities and identify risks before they become significant problems. • Must be responsive, responsible, and able to manage this role alongside any other professional commitments. • Must be available to attend scheduled virtual meetings during our working hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Central Time. Preferred • Published research. • Experience with NIH, CIHR, NSF, or similar funding organizations. • Experience leading a research, science, or grants function. • Experience managing scientific writers, researchers, or multidisciplinary teams. • Experience developing scientific processes, SOPs, templates, or quality standards. • Startup or digital health experience. What Success Looks Like • The Science and Grants function has clear leadership, priorities, and accountability. • Scientific writers and researchers receive clear direction and useful feedback. • Scientific deliverables are accurate, consistent, and completed on time. • Grant applications are stronger and properly reviewed before submission. • Scientific evidence is appropriately reflected in product and program decisions. • Risks and delays are identified and addressed early. • Leadership receives concise updates and only becomes involved when strategic input or approval is required. • Fewer revisions are required during executive review. • Research workflows, documentation, and review standards improve over time. • The function operates effectively without all scientific work flowing directly through executive leadership.
