Interactive real-time data visualization for exhibition (WebGL / creative developer)
Worldwide
We're producing an exhibition and need a creative developer for the interactive data visualizations in its final room, which conveys the human cost of World War II. The visual language is icon-based (1 icon = 1,000 people), similar in spirit to Neil Halloran's "The Fallen of World War II" — but interactive, and with our own design. Setup: Five stations in one room. Each has a projection (beamer on a wall) and a touch control in front of it. Visitors pick a dataset on the touch control, and the projected visualization builds up in real time. What gets visualized: Across the five stations, visitors explore datasets such as: Deaths by country Deaths by nationality / persecuted group Deaths over time (timeline of the war) Destruction of cities and infrastructure Displacement — millions fleeing, being deported, and returning, shown on an animated map Each station holds several datasets the visitor can switch between. Three of the stations share one consistent icon system so people can intuitively compare the scale of numbers. How the visualization must behave (core of the job): Build-up animation: icons appear sequentially (not all at once), stacking or streaming into place, so the sheer scale becomes felt — this animation quality is the most important part of the piece Live counter: a running number counts up in sync with the icons appearing; same font and position across the shared stations Military vs. civilian: shown as two color tones within the same icon system Figures shown as an average: many WWII numbers are only known within a range — we show the average as the icon count, with a small text note indicating the range and source Switching datasets: when a visitor picks a different dataset, icons should re-animate / regroup, not just reload Some stations (columns of icons) may be taller than the screen — a vertical camera pan over a huge column is part of the intended effect We're open to your technical approach. We imagine a web-based real-time setup running locally on a mini-PC per station, but we don't want to lock it in. If you've built installations like this and see a better or simpler way, tell us how you would build it. The hard requirements are only: Interactive and real-time (reacts to visitor input — not a pre-rendered video) Smoothly animates thousands of icons at once Runs reliably in an exhibition: fullscreen, auto-start on power-on, no visible browser or OS Datasets (numbers, ranges, sources) easy for us to update without touching code What we provide: Complete design system (icon design, colors, animation reference) All datasets per station (figures, ranges, sources) You should have: A portfolio of interactive / real-time visual work — ideally exhibition or installation builds (please link it) Strong data-visualization sense, not just motion graphics Please include in your proposal: Links to relevant past work (interactive/real-time — not rendered videos) How you would approach this technically, and why How you'd achieve the build-up animation and synced counter smoothly with thousands of icons How you'd handle reliable exhibition operation (auto-start, kiosk, control ↔ projection in sync) A rough estimate of effort and timeline
