Long-term partnership. Individual operator or tight team. Bootstrapped. Pre-launch. Remote. We’d love to hear how you’d approach this. The venture BuildQuest is a SaaS marketplace helping homeowners plan $100K–$2M residential construction projects. We solve a chronic two-sided problem: homeowners paralyzed by scope, style, budget, and pro-matching decisions — and pros exhausted from chasing unrealistic prospects through referral platforms that charge them to play. Homeowners are the paying customer. Pros are served through serving homeowners well. That order defines everything, and it’s the inverse of every referral platform in the category. Someone will build a category-defining brand around this positioning in the next 24 months. We intend it to be us. The product you’d be marketing BuildQuest guides homeowners through four AI-augmented modules: ProjectProfile (scoping the project), VisionSpec (capturing personal style through generated imagery), CostCompass (building a realistic budget), and ProQuest (matching to qualified pros). Woven throughout is Quinn — our conversational AI guide with a voice-trained character who helps homeowners think through decisions. You’d also be working with two live marketing websites, an established podcast with 59 episodes and growing, a published book, a small email list ready to grow, and a Brand Standards v2 foundation already in place. Real product, real content library, real story to tell. Why now • AI is rewriting consumer discovery. Google search is plateauing; homeowners increasingly ask ChatGPT and Perplexity when planning major decisions. • The referral-platform model is collapsing under pro fatigue and broken unit economics. • Consumer expectations for premium service are at an all-time high — and almost nothing in residential construction meets them. The role and how we’d work together You’d be our first marketing partner. The product is in good hands — real engineering team, UI/UX and product lead, deep-tech advisory board. What we need is a partner to build out the entire public-facing marketing layer: brand voice, story, creative, distribution, infrastructure. That work starts before launch and continues for the long haul after. You’d partner directly with Bill (founder) and Clint (UI/UX + product). Small team, no politics, decisions in days not months. Bill is engaged at the weekly working session and on decisions that matter — you bring finished thinking; we refine and ship together. Who we’re looking for • A storyteller and copywriter first. Someone who can take complex construction expertise and turn it into writing that hooks homeowners and earns pros’ trust. • Visually fluent. Comfortable bringing concepts to life as mockups, ad creative, social, and video concepts — without waiting on a designer. Figma, Canva, and AI design tools. • Sector-experienced. Home improvement, real estate, or residential design/construction background — or a demonstrated ability to go deep on a complex vertical fast. • 0→1 launch experience. You’ve shaped brand positioning from scratch and taken products from pre-launch through public phases. • Fluent in AI-era discovery. You think about presence inside AI-generated answers (GEO/AEO), not just search results. • Distribution-minded. Reach and engagement are your primary metric — not output volume. You lean on owned attention; you use paid sparingly. • Lifecycle-oriented. You think in the full arc: acquisition, activation, retention, expansion, referral. • AI-augmented in practice. You’ve built real workflows that let a small team deliver what used to take ten people. • Analytical and systems-minded. You can propose a marketing stack appropriate to an early-stage, bootstrapped two-sided SaaS — and build reusable systems, not one-off campaigns. Nice-to-have • Two-sided marketplace experience • Vertical SaaS marketing • Founder-led content systems Engagement We’re not specifying fixed hours, retainer amounts, or budget — we want to see what you’d propose. Tell us: solo or tight team, time commitment, model (retainer, project, or hybrid), the stack you’d recommend with approximate run-rate cost, a rough 90-day approach, and how you think about staying beyond launch. We evaluate on quality of thinking and fit — not just price. How to apply Please review the attached Marketing Manifesto before applying — eight beliefs that shape how we think about marketing in this category. Candidates who engage with it directly (naming principles that resonate and one they’d push back on) are evaluated more favorably. Submit your proposal via Upwork with: • Cover letter (300 words max) with your reaction to the Manifesto, sector background, and how you operate as an AI-augmented marketer • Work samples: one writing sample, one visual sample, and 2–3 portfolio examples (a 0→1 launch, an AI-augmented workflow, or a positioning framework) • Stack & engagement proposal as described above • Three references (B2B/B2C SaaS preferred) • Optional but valued: a 2–3 minute Loom introducing yourself Process Intro call (30 min) → If this sounds like your kind of work We’d love to hear from you. And if it doesn’t quite fit but you know someone we should talk to — please send them our way. Good referrals often start the best conversations. About the founder Bill Reid — 30+ years in residential design and construction. Author of The Awakened Homeowner. Host of Your Home Building Coach podcast (59 episodes and growing). Advisory board includes former Apple designers and CTO-level tech leadership. Built Quinn (BuildQuest’s AI guide) and the content workflows behind the platform — which is part of why he thinks differently about what a small team can do with modern tools.
