Mechanical Design Engineer – Redesign Classic Vehicle Bonnet (Hood) Hinges for Manufacture
Worldwide
I'm looking for an experienced mechanical design engineer to redesign a pair of bonnet (hood) hinges for a classic vehicle. The aim is not to recreate the original part, but to develop a design that is significantly easier and more cost-effective to manufacture while maintaining the original movement and fitment. What I will provide 3D scan of the complete engine bay with the bonnet installed and hinges fitted. 3D scan of an original hinge removed from the vehicle. An existing CAD model of the original hinge (created by another freelancer from the hinge scan), which can be used as a starting point. Any dimensions or additional information required during the project. Project Requirements The successful freelancer will: Align and utilise the supplied scans and CAD data. Design a completely manufacturable pair of bonnet hinges. Ensure the hinge follows the correct kinematic motion so the bonnet opens and closes correctly without fouling the bodywork or engine bay. Validate the motion by assembling the mechanism within CAD and demonstrating the full opening and closing movement. Design the components for manufacture primarily from laser-cut and folded sheet metal where practical. Optimise the design for repeatable production and straightforward assembly. Produce a professional CAD assembly with all pivot locations correctly constrained. Bearing Design One of the main improvements over the original design is the pivot arrangement. The factory hinges tend to wear, seize and develop excessive play over time. I would like each pivot point redesigned to incorporate a suitable bearing or bushing arrangement, for example: Oilite bronze bushes Flanged bushes Needle roller bearings Ball bearings Another suitable engineering solution The chosen solution should be practical, durable and appropriate for automotive use. Deliverables Fully parametric CAD model (preferably SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or similar) Complete hinge assembly Individual part files Manufacturing-ready sheet metal parts Flat patterns where applicable Assembly showing the bonnet fully open and fully closed Demonstration that the hinge follows the correct motion throughout its travel Manufacturing drawings (if agreed) Ideal Experience Mechanical product design Automotive mechanisms Sheet metal design CAD motion studies Design for manufacture (DFM) Bearings, pivots and linkage mechanisms Please include examples of similar mechanical assemblies, hinge mechanisms, suspension components, linkages or automotive products you have designed. This is intended to become a production part, so I'm looking for someone who can contribute engineering input rather than simply reproduce the existing hinge. Note: We will own all IP from this design. Note: Please do not use AI in your response or your work.
