Municipal Pipe Estimator for Canadian Tenders

Summary

We're a municipal piping contractor in Atlantic Canada. We bid public tenders for watermain, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer installation — trenching, pipe laying, structures, service connections, restoration. We bid steadily and we're looking for takeoff and estimating support so our senior estimator can focus on pricing and strategy instead of counting. WHAT YOU'D BE DOING - Quantity takeoffs from municipal tender drawings: pipe by diameter, material and class; manholes, catch basins, valves, hydrants, tees, bends and fittings - Trench excavation, bedding and backfill quantities by class, per the spec sections - Service connections and restoration areas (asphalt, concrete, topsoil and sod) - Populating unit-price bid forms - Chasing and organizing supplier quotes - Maintaining our historical unit cost database You are NOT setting unit prices or making the call on the final bid number — we do that here. You produce accurate, well-organized, auditable quantities and flag anything ambiguous in the drawings or specs. WHAT WE NEED - Demonstrated experience on underground utilities, site servicing or municipal infrastructure. Buildings and residential experience alone won't transfer to this work. - Working knowledge of Bluebeam Revu, PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, AGTEK or HeavyBid/HCSS - Ability to read spec sections and pull quantities that match how the bid form is structured - Enough written English to flag discrepancies clearly and ask good questions - Reliable overlap with Atlantic Canada hours (UTC-3) for part of your day, especially near bid deadlines NICE TO HAVE - Canadian or North American tender experience (CSA standards, unit-price bid forms, addenda handling) - Experience building or maintaining a cost history database - Civil engineering degree or QS credential HOW THIS WORKS We start with a paid test takeoff on a package we've already bid and know the answers to — expect 6 to 8 hours, paid at your rate. We compare your quantities to our actuals. If they hold up, we move to ongoing work, with the goal of a long-term relationship rather than one-off packages. Please open your cover letter with the word CULVERT so we know you read this.
