Native game localization - 527 UI strings + App Store listing
Worldwide
Native speakers wanted to localise a small mobile arcade game and its app store page. We are hiring one translator per language, in Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and Ukrainian. Apply for the one you are native in. THE GAME Hoverline is a fast arcade game. You fly a small jet down an endless course, weaving between pylons, skimming past them for bonus points, going faster and faster until you touch one and the run ends. It is played in short bursts, one-handed, mostly on a phone. It is a paid game launching on iOS and Android. The writing is terse and confident. Short sentences. It talks about the run, not about the player's feelings, and it never congratulates you for nothing. Keeping that flatness matters more than any individual word choice. THE WORK Two parts: 1. The game itself: 527 strings, about 2,020 words. Menus, buttons, results screens, achievement names, settings. Two thirds of these are one to three words long, so this is interface writing rather than prose: each short label takes real thought about context, length and staying consistent with the other 526. Please do not quote it as if it were 2,000 words of continuous text. 2. The store listing: 10 fields, about 880 words, for the App Store and Google Play. This is transcreation, not translation. Write the page that sells this game to players in your market; do not render the English sentences into your language. Rewriting it completely is the correct outcome if that is what works. The keyword field must be researched for your market and never translated: it is a search field, and what people actually type is rarely a translation of the English words. Please do part 1 first. The store page should reuse the terms you settle on in the game. WHAT YOU GET A single folder: a written brief, the strings as a CSV with the English and context for every row, and a glossary of terms that must not be translated. Nothing to install and nothing to sign into. Work in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets and send the file back. WHAT MATTERS Some strings contain a placeholder: a short word wrapped in curly braces, which the game replaces with a real value when it runs, such as a player's name or a number. Copy every placeholder into your translation exactly as it appears, braces included. You can move one within the sentence, but it must not be renamed, translated or dropped. The file marks which rows contain them. Three strings need plural forms, and if your language needs more forms than English does, add them. Some strings sit in tight interface slots and carry a character limit, marked per row; over the limit, text is clipped or the layout breaks. No em dashes or en dashes anywhere, plain hyphen only. IMPORTANT The file contains an existing machine-generated draft, provided as context only. Please write "HOVERLINE" at the top of your application, just so we know you've read it. No native speaker has read any of it and much of it is wrong. Please ignore it and translate from the English, rather than polishing the draft or translating back from it. That is the entire reason this job exists. We check how much of a returned file is unchanged from that draft. A file that comes back largely identical to it has not done the work. WHAT TO QUOTE Please quote a fixed price for the game strings and the store listing. TO APPLY Tell us which language you are native in. Include one short paragraph, written in that language, naming a term in a game like this that you would translate differently from the obvious choice, and why. Two or three sentences is plenty. Applications without it will not be read. Tell us briefly whether you play games, and on what.
