Summary

Optical Measurement & Prescription Verification Software Developer We are looking for an experienced developer to design and build an optical measurement and prescription verification system for our eyewear business. The software could be developed as a website-integrated tool/plugin, web application, or API-based system, depending on the developer’s recommended architecture. The core purpose is to allow accurate collection, calculation and validation of optical measurements and prescription data before an eyewear order is processed. Key functionality The system should be capable of handling and validating information including: - Binocular and monocular PD (Pupillary Distance) - Segment height / fitting height - Right and left eye measurements - Sphere, cylinder and axis - Add / near addition - Horizontal and vertical prism - Prism direction/base - Optical centre - Frame measurements - Lens measurements and dimensions - Decentration - Vertex distance - Pantoscopic angle - Face-form/wrap angle - Bridge and fitting measurements - Other relevant optical parameters Measurement validation & tolerances This is the most important part of the project. We do not simply want a form that accepts measurements. The system needs to contain a proper optical validation and rules engine capable of identifying measurements that are outside the appropriate professional/technical tolerances. For example, if a PD, fitting height, optical centre or prism measurement is outside the permitted/defined tolerance, the system should automatically flag the measurement and require verification before an order can proceed. The developer will need to research and correctly implement the relevant UK optical standards, professional guidance, GOC requirements where applicable, and recognised industry tolerances. We want the tolerance rules to be properly documented so that we know exactly why the system accepts or rejects a particular measurement. Intelligent calculations The system should also be capable of performing relevant optical calculations, including: - Decentration calculations - Optical centre calculations - Prism calculations - Induced prism calculations where applicable - Right/left eye calculations - Prescription consistency checks - Measurement consistency checks - Frame/lens compatibility checks - Alerts for potentially incorrect or incomplete data The system should clearly explain or display the reason for any warning or rejection. Website integration Our preference is for the final system to be capable of integrating with our existing website. We are open to the developer recommending the best technical approach, such as: - Website plugin/widget - API - Embedded web application - Standalone application connected to our website - Other scalable architecture The system should be designed so that it can be expanded in the future. Potential future functionality We are also interested in the possibility of incorporating camera/mobile-phone-based optical measurements in the future, such as using a smartphone camera to assist with PD and other measurements. This does not necessarily need to be included in the first version, but the architecture should allow for this possibility. Accuracy is critical This is an optical application, so accuracy and reliability are extremely important. We are looking for a developer who understands that incorrect measurements can result in incorrect prescription eyewear being produced. The software therefore needs: - Robust validation - Clearly defined tolerance limits - Error checking - Comprehensive testing - Accurate calculations - Auditability of measurements - Clear warnings when information requires manual verification Ideal developer Experience in any of the following would be highly advantageous: - Optical/ophthalmic software - Optical dispensing - Prescription eyewear - Healthcare software - Measurement systems - Computer vision - Image processing - E-commerce integrations - API development - Complex calculation/validation systems Direct optical industry experience is a major advantage. If you do not have optical experience, you must be comfortable researching the relevant standards and working with detailed technical requirements. What we expect from you Please include in your proposal: 1. Examples of similar software you have developed. 2. Any experience with optical, healthcare, prescription or measurement systems. 3. Your recommended technical architecture. 4. How you would build the measurement/tolerance validation engine. 5. How you would test the accuracy of the calculations. 6. Whether you can integrate the system with an existing website. 7. Your estimated development timeline. 8. Your estimated cost for an initial MVP and a fully developed system. We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the technical side of the project, not simply code the requirements we give them. The successful developer will need to understand the underlying optical requirements, translate them into accurate software logic, and build a reliable system that can eventually become an important part of our eyewear ordering process. Please only apply if you are confident you can handle a technically demanding measurement and validation system where accuracy is critical.
