Research: Deregistered Australian Businesses and Startup Incubators With Expired Domains
Worldwide
I'm looking for a researcher to build a list of Australian businesses that meet all four of these conditions: They operated in tech, legal, or financial services. See below for what counts. They were a small or medium business — not a large corporation, not ASX-listed, not a subsidiary of a multinational. They had real traction — a business that actually operated and had customers for a few years, not a shell company or an idea that never launched. They no longer exist - deregistered by ASIC and/or ABN cancelled on the Australian Business Register. They had their own web domain, and that domain has since expired - it is no longer registered to anyone. All five have to be true. If a business never had its own domain, or the domain is still registered, leave it out. Sectors that count Tech - software and SaaS, app and web development agencies, IT services and support, hosting, digital agencies, e-commerce platforms, data and analytics Legal - law firms, conveyancers, patent and trade mark attorneys, migration agents, legal services and legal tech Financial - accounting and bookkeeping, financial planning and advice, mortgage and finance broking, insurance broking, lending, payments and fintech If a business straddles two of these, that's fine — note both. Anything outside these three, leave out. Note that the company registers don't carry an industry code, so sector has to be established from the archived website itself. How the work runs The efficient order is to start from expired domain data and work backwards to the company, rather than starting from the company register and trying to guess domains. ASIC has millions of dead companies and no way to tell which ones mattered - the web archive and domain data are what tell you a business had traction. I'll give you a full brief with the sources and the method once we start. Rough shape: Source expired/dropped Australian domain inventory Filter for signs the site was a real, established business (age, archive depth, content) Identify the operating company behind each domain Confirm ASIC deregistration and ABN cancellation Confirm the domain is genuinely unregistered now - not parked, not for sale, not in redemption Screen out anything too large, plus shells, spam sites, and defunct domains that were never a real business There's a useful shortcut for the legal and financial ones: several regulators publish lists of cancelled licences and terminated registrations, which are effectively ready-made lists of dead firms in those sectors. Details in the brief. What I'm looking for Comfortable with the Wayback Machine and WHOIS/RDAP lookups Access to a backlink or domain-history tool (Ahrefs, Majestic, SEMrush, DomCop or similar) is a big plus - tell me which you have Comfortable with large CSV files; Python or SQL is a bonus but not required Careful and honest about uncertainty - I'd rather have a row marked "couldn't confirm" than a confident guess Deliverables A spreadsheet in a schema I'll provide: business name, domain, evidence the site existed, ASIC/ABN status, domain status, source links A short note on your method, sources, and anything you couldn't verify A working tab showing what you discarded and why Volume Start with a target of 50 confirmed rows. If the hit rate turns out to be better or worse than expected, tell me early and we'll adjust rather than you grinding through it. If this goes well there's more work.
