Senior Full-Stack Developer / Technical Contractor — C#, Angular, Azure, Elasticsearch
Worldwide
About Enerlytic Enerlytic is a small UK-based energy technology business providing energy monitoring and analytics services to corporate customers. Our platform helps organisations better understand their energy consumption and energy bills, identify opportunities to reduce consumption and costs, and support the transition towards greener technologies such as solar generation. We are looking for an experienced Senior Full-Stack Developer / Technical Contractor to help maintain, improve and develop our existing software platform. This is not a permanent employee position. We are looking to establish a reliable, longer-term relationship with an experienced independent developer. The contractor may be based in the UK or internationally but must be fluent in spoken and written English and comfortable communicating directly with the business owner. The Role Enerlytic is a small business and currently has no other internal technical employees. Because of this, we are not looking for someone who can only work on narrowly defined coding tasks. You will need to be comfortable taking technical ownership across the application and infrastructure, investigating existing systems, diagnosing problems and recommending appropriate solutions. Initially, the work will primarily involve: Understanding the existing application and architecture Working through an existing backlog of software bugs and technical issues Diagnosing problems across front-end, back-end, database and infrastructure components Improving application stability and maintainability Reviewing existing code where necessary Identifying technical debt and areas of risk Making smaller enhancements to the existing platform Once you understand the system, the role will expand into larger development projects and new functionality. We expect the engagement to begin at approximately 2–3 days per week, with the potential for additional work as the relationship develops. We are open to working on an hourly-rate basis and would like applicants to provide their normal hourly rate. Core Technology Stack Strong commercial experience with the following is important: C# / .NET Angular TypeScript Elasticsearch Microsoft Azure SQL and database design/administration Git and source-control workflows REST APIs / web services The platform also interacts with IoT and energy-monitoring infrastructure, so experience with the following is particularly valuable: MQTT IoT systems Telemetry/data ingestion Time-series or high-volume data Background services and scheduled processing Cloud-hosted applications Monitoring, logging and diagnostics You do not necessarily need to be an expert in every technology listed above, but you must have sufficiently broad technical experience to independently investigate unfamiliar areas and make sound engineering decisions. Azure & Infrastructure The successful contractor will need to be comfortable working with Microsoft Azure and supporting the infrastructure behind the application. Experience may include areas such as: Azure App Services Azure Functions Azure SQL Storage Networking Application Insights Logging and monitoring Identity and access management Deployment pipelines Backup and recovery Security Cost management We are looking for someone who understands that maintaining a production platform involves more than writing application code. What We Are Looking For We are particularly interested in developers who: Have substantial real-world commercial software development experience Can work independently without needing continuous technical supervision Are comfortable inheriting and understanding an existing codebase Can debug complex problems methodically Understand both software development and production infrastructure Can explain technical issues clearly to a non-developer business owner Know when to improve existing code and when not to unnecessarily rewrite it Produce maintainable, understandable code Use sensible Git practices Consider security, reliability and performance as part of development Can document important technical decisions Are comfortable taking responsibility for their own work Communicate clearly when they identify risks or problems Previous experience working with a small business, SaaS product or existing production application would be particularly useful. Use of AI Development Tools We are happy for developers to use modern AI coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor or similar tools where they improve productivity. However, we are specifically not looking for someone whose development capability depends on AI generating code they do not properly understand. You must have genuine software engineering experience and be capable of independently reviewing, debugging and validating any AI-generated code. If you use AI development tools, we expect you to: Understand the code being produced Review it before committing it Validate that it meets the requirements Identify incorrect or insecure suggestions Test the resulting implementation Maintain appropriate coding standards Remain personally accountable for the solution The ability to use AI tools effectively is considered a benefit. The inability to work without them is not. Working Relationship You will work primarily with the owner of Enerlytic. We therefore value clear communication highly. You should be comfortable: Discussing requirements directly Asking appropriate questions when requirements are unclear Explaining technical options and trade-offs Providing realistic estimates Highlighting risks before they become problems Giving regular progress updates Recording work clearly through tickets, Git commits and documentation Because Enerlytic is based in the UK, some reasonable overlap with UK working hours will be required for meetings and communication. You do not need to work exclusively during UK hours. Initial Work The first stage of the engagement will be deliberately practical. We have an existing backlog of bugs and smaller technical issues. The successful developer will begin by working through selected items from this backlog. This will allow both parties to establish: How quickly you can understand the existing system The quality of your debugging and development work Your communication style Your ability to work independently The quality of your code and Git practices Whether the working relationship is a good long-term fit Following this initial work, we expect to move onto larger development tasks and new product functionality. Availability We initially expect approximately: 2–3 days per week There is potential for this to increase depending on workload, performance and future projects. We are interested in establishing an ongoing relationship rather than finding someone for a single isolated task. Please tell us: Your normal working hours Your timezone Your current weekly availability Your hourly rate Whether you are personally completing the work or working through an agency/team Application Requirements Please do not send a generic proposal. In your application, please answer the following questions. 1. C# / .NET Experience Briefly describe a production system you have personally developed or maintained using C#/.NET. What was your responsibility for the system? 2. Angular Which versions of Angular have you worked with commercially and what type of applications have you built or maintained? 3. Azure Describe the parts of Microsoft Azure that you have personally configured, maintained or troubleshot. Please distinguish between Azure systems you have directly managed and systems where another DevOps/infrastructure team handled the deployment. 4. Debugging Existing Systems Imagine you inherit an application where users report an intermittent bug, there is limited documentation and the original developer is unavailable. Briefly explain how you would approach diagnosing the problem. 5. MQTT / IoT Describe any experience you have with MQTT, IoT devices, telemetry platforms or high-volume data ingestion. If you do not have this experience, please say so rather than providing a generic answer. 6. Elasticsearch Describe your practical Elasticsearch experience. For example, have you worked with: Index design Queries Aggregations Performance issues Mapping Data ingestion Cluster management 7. AI Coding Tools Which AI development tools do you currently use, if any? Give one example where an AI coding tool produced an incorrect or unsuitable solution and explain how you recognised and corrected the problem. 8. Git Describe your normal Git workflow when developing and releasing changes to a production application. 9. Availability Please provide: Your location/timezone Your hourly rate Your weekly availability How much overlap you can provide with UK working hours 10. Who Will Do the Work? Please confirm whether you personally will perform the development work. If you are applying through an agency, clearly explain who will actually work on the project and whether that person will remain assigned to Enerlytic. Important We are interested in developers who want to understand and improve the product over time. We would prefer an experienced developer working independently for 2–3 days per week over a larger agency where different developers are repeatedly assigned to the project. Code quality, reliability, technical judgement and communication are more important to us than simply completing the largest possible number of tickets. If the initial engagement works well, there is the potential for a significant ongoing development relationship with Enerlytic.
