Sound Designer - SFX and ambience for safety-training modules

Posted 2 days ago

Summary

We make immersive safety-training modules for industrial companies - oil & gas, energy, construction, datacenters. Our modules are story-driven video scenes with narration already in place. What they need from you is everything else: the sound effects, ambiences, and mix that make an industrial world feel real. Some of our raw sound starts as AI-generated effects - they get us part of the way there, but the last stretch is where we need a real ear. We're looking for someone to design, build, and mix the sound world of our modules so every scene lands. Why this matters These modules teach frontline workers how to stay safe, and sound is half of what makes a hazard feel like a hazard. A lift that creaks under load, a data hall's wall of fan noise, the silence before something goes wrong - that's your department. Without a real sound designer: generated effects come out close but wrong (the wrong machine, the wrong weight, the wrong room) scenes feel flat and empty, or effects fight the narration instead of sitting under it the same environment sounds different from one scene to the next key story beats pass without any sonic weight behind them Your job is to make every scene sound deliberate - without anyone noticing your work. What you'll do Design and build sound effects for on-screen actions: machinery, tools, vehicles, alarms, impacts, falls - synced frame by frame Build ambiences for industrial settings - drilling rigs, data halls, construction sites, plant rooms - from designed, library, and generated sources Fix or replace AI-generated effects that don't match what's actually happening in the frame Mix scenes to picture: place effects, ambience, and music around the existing narration so the story always reads clearly and the world feels real Keep the sound of a module consistent scene to scene, and the sound of a series consistent module to module Turn work around quickly - we run several modules in parallel and audio is often one of the last steps before delivery Where this could grow We're building automation around our audio pipeline: scripted effect generation, batch loudness processing, and checks that catch weak takes before a human hears them. This isn't part of the role today, but as it develops there may be scope for the right person to help shape it - turning the judgments you make by ear into checks the pipeline runs on its own. If that kind of work interests you, mention it; it's a bonus, not a requirement. What we need from you Solid sound design and mixing skills in a real DAW - Reaper, Pro Tools, Audition, Logic or similar. You can take a silent-but-narrated scene and deliver a finished, consistent mix. Sound design to picture - you can watch a scene, hear what's missing, and build it, with sync that holds up frame by frame. A strong library workflow - you know how to find, layer, and process effects so they feel recorded on location, not dropped in. Mixing judgment around dialogue - the narration is already there; you make everything else sit under it at a consistent loudness spec without ever masking it. Experience using AI audio tools (ElevenLabs SFX or similar) as a starting point you then fix and refine - not as the finished product. A sharp, consistent ear - you notice when one scene's room tone doesn't match the last one, and it bothers you until it's fixed. Reliable communication and availability with some overlap with UK working hours. Nice to have (not required): foley recording, music editing, game audio, or experience with safety, industrial or technical content.
