Usability Testing Moderator
Worldwide
Summary We are a New York-based AI startup building a next-generation language learning platform powered by personalized, dynamic content. Led by a founder who previously scaled a company to more than $100 million in revenue, we are building an adaptive system where each learner receives content tailored to their level, interests, and progress. We are looking for a freelance Usability Testing Moderator to run 1:1 sessions with our users using Maze, Useberry, or a similar remote testing tool. You will guide participants through structured tasks, explain what we're testing and why, offer assistance when they get stuck, and capture detailed notes on how they actually use the product, not just what they say about it. Scope of work - Conduct 15-20 minute moderated usability testing calls with users - Open each session by explaining the purpose of the test and what's expected of the participant - Walk participants through predefined tasks and scenarios in the product - Provide assistance when a participant is stuck, without leading them to the answer - Take detailed notes on behavior, confusion points, hesitations, and direct quotes - Run and record sessions using Maze, Useberry, or a comparable tool - Track task completion, drop-off points, and time-on-task where relevant - Compile session notes into clear, organized summaries after each round of testing - Coordinate scheduling with participants and the internal team - Flag recurring patterns and critical usability issues to the product team promptly What we are looking for - Experience moderating usability tests or user interviews (Maze, Useberry, UserTesting, Lookback, or similar) - Comfortable leading live calls with users: explaining tasks clearly and keeping participants at ease - Strong active listening and note-taking skills, able to capture behavior and not just opinions - Ability to stay neutral during sessions: no leading questions, no steering toward an answer - Clear, organized written communication for summarizing findings - Reliable availability for scheduled calls across the testing window - Experience with consumer apps, mobile products, or EdTech is a plus - Comfort working independently in a fast-moving, early-stage environment This is a freelance, part-time, project-based role with potential for continued work. The role is fully remote.
