Virtual Academic Tutor (8th Grade + HSPT Prep) Position: Part-Time Virtual Academic Tutor Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Pacific Time) Location: Virtual We are seeking an engaging, experienced, and dependable virtual tutor to support our son as he enters 8th grade. The ideal candidate will not only help him stay on top of daily homework but also build his confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and prepare him for the High School Placement Test (HSPT) for private high school admissions. Responsibilities Provide one-on-one virtual tutoring Monday through Friday from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM PT Assist with nightly homework and upcoming quizzes, tests, and projects Reinforce concepts taught in school and identify areas where additional support is needed Develop personalized study plans and organizational skills Prepare the student for the HSPT, including test-taking strategies, timed practice, and review of key concepts Communicate progress and areas for improvement with parents on a regular basis Foster a positive, encouraging, and engaging learning environment that motivates the student to do his best Desired Qualifications Experience tutoring middle school students, preferably 8th grade Strong knowledge of the California 8th grade curriculum, including: Pre-Algebra/Algebra readiness (linear equations, functions, geometry, statistics, and problem-solving) English Language Arts (reading comprehension, analytical writing, grammar, vocabulary, and essay writing) Integrated Science (physical science, life science, Earth and space science, and scientific inquiry) U.S. History and Civics (Founding of the United States, Constitution, westward expansion, Civil War, Reconstruction, and civic engagement) Demonstrated experience preparing students for the HSPT or similar high school entrance exams (ISEE, SSAT, etc.) Ability to explain challenging concepts in a clear, patient, and engaging manner Comfortable using Zoom, Google Meet, or similar virtual learning platforms Reliable, punctual, and organized Ideal Candidate We're looking for someone who: Makes learning enjoyable and interactive Builds rapport with teenagers and knows how to keep them engaged Can adapt teaching methods to fit different learning styles Sets high expectations while remaining encouraging and supportive Helps students become more independent and confident learners Preferred Previous classroom teaching experience Familiarity with California academic standards Availability for occasional additional sessions before major exams or the HSPT When applying, please include: A brief summary of your tutoring experience Experience with HSPT preparation and student outcomes Subjects you specialize in Your hourly rate Two professional references
