Web App for STL/PLY File Viewing

Full-Stack Developer — 3D Dental Abutment Design Viewer & Remote Approval Platform Project Overview We're building a web-based application that allows dental laboratory technicians to upload 3D custom abutment/restoration design files (STL/PLY) and enables referring dentists to remotely view, rotate, inspect, and approve or request revisions on those designs — replacing a slower, less structured review process. This is a real, ongoing digital workflow for a multi-location dental lab, with room for continued engagement beyond the initial build if it's a good fit. Scope of Work Build a browser-based 3D viewer (Three.js or react-three-fiber) supporting STL/PLY file loading, orbit/pan/zoom, cross-section/clipping plane view, and basic measurement tools Build a case management dashboard: case list, status tracking (Submitted → Pending Review → Approved/Revision Requested → Finalized), file upload/storage Build a dentist-facing approval flow: secure per-case access (magic link or token-based), mesh viewing, approve/reject with mesh-anchored annotations Implement role-based access control (lab technician, dentist, admin) Set up notifications (email/SMS) when a case is ready for dentist review Implement an audit trail (timestamp + identity on every approval/revision action) Optimize for performance on large mesh files (LOD/decimation or progressive loading for full-arch cases) Ensure responsive, touch-friendly UI — dentists will use desktops, iPads, and phones Set up cloud file storage (S3-compatible) and backend API Basic handling for PHI-adjacent data with a security-conscious posture (de-identified patient references where possible) Required Skills & Experience Strong experience with Three.js (or react-three-fiber) and WebGL-based 3D rendering Experience loading/rendering STL, PLY, or similar mesh formats in-browser Full-stack development: solid frontend (React preferred) + backend (Node.js, Python, or similar) experience Experience with cloud file storage (AWS S3 or equivalent) and REST/GraphQL API design Experience implementing authentication and role-based access control Experience with responsive/mobile-friendly UI development Comfortable working with large binary files and optimizing load performance (mesh decimation, LOD, streaming, or similar techniques) Clear communicator, comfortable with async collaboration and iterative feedback Nice to Have Prior experience in dental, medical imaging, CAD/CAM, or other technical 3D visualization domains Familiarity with HIPAA-adjacent data handling practices Experience with mesh comparison/deviation mapping (e.g., color-coded overlay between two meshes) Experience with occt-import-js or CAD format conversion (STEP, etc.) Experience with notification systems (Twilio, SendGrid, or similar) Deliverables Working web application (viewer + case dashboard + dentist approval flow) deployed to a staging environment Source code with reasonable documentation for handoff/maintenance Brief technical write-up of architecture decisions (storage, auth, mesh handling approach) Engagement Details Project type: [Fixed price / Hourly — specify] Estimated timeline: 3 months How to Apply Please include: Relevant past projects involving Three.js/WebGL or 3D file rendering (links or demos strongly preferred) Your proposed tech stack for this build Availability and estimated timeline for an MVP (viewer + basic approval flow)
