Young Adult Fiction Writing Mentor & Developmental Editor
Worldwide
We are looking for an experienced young adult fiction editor and writing mentor to help a talented young writer develop her first full-length YA novel. Brianna is currently working from an early outline and has begun writing the opening chapters. She is serious about becoming a strong author and wants more than basic proofreading or grammar corrections. We are looking for someone who can mentor her throughout the writing process, help strengthen the story, and guide her toward creating an exceptional finished manuscript. What We Need The right person will help Brianna: Develop and strengthen the overall story concept Build a clear, compelling plot and chapter structure Create believable characters with strong motivations and emotional depth Improve dialogue, pacing, tension, conflict, and scene development Identify plot holes, inconsistencies, and areas that need more development Strengthen her writing without taking away her unique voice Review chapters as they are completed and provide detailed, encouraging feedback Establish realistic writing goals and maintain forward progress Prepare the completed manuscript for professional editing and eventual publication The Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who: Has experience writing, editing, or publishing young adult fiction Understands the expectations of modern YA readers Has experience with developmental editing, book coaching, or author mentorship Can explain feedback clearly without overwhelming or discouraging a young writer Knows how to challenge a writer while remaining positive and encouraging Is dependable, responsive, and willing to build a long-term mentoring relationship Can provide honest feedback instead of simply telling us everything looks great Experience mentoring teenage or first-time authors would be especially valuable. Project Structure We expect this to be an ongoing project that may include: Regular video or phone coaching sessions Review and editing of submitted chapters Written feedback and recommended revisions Plotting and story-development sessions Accountability and milestone planning Developmental editing of the completed manuscript We are open to either an hourly arrangement or a milestone-based project. Please explain how you normally structure this type of mentorship. When Applying Please include: Your experience with young adult fiction Examples of books or manuscripts you have edited or helped develop Your experience mentoring young or first-time writers How you would guide a writer from an early outline through a completed manuscript Your preferred meeting and feedback schedule Your hourly rate or proposed project structure Please begin your proposal with the words “YA Mentor” so we know you read the complete posting. We are not looking for someone to rewrite the book for her. We want someone who can teach, guide, challenge, and encourage Brianna while helping her become a stronger writer and create a book she can be genuinely proud of.
