2D game character artist / sprite artist
Worldwide
I'm developing a tactical grid game in Unity and am looking for a characer artist to create 4–5 full-body battle sprites based on 5 completed character designs. I already have full-body concept art for all five characters, including their clothing, armor, weapons, hair, colors, and facial features. I'm not looking for redesigns—I need these existing characters translated into a cohesive battle-sprite style. Most Important: Visual Cohesion All five characters need to look like they belong to the same game and same sprite set, with consistent proportions, linework, shading, level of detail, and facial treatment. I already have one battle sprite I'm happy with. You can either: - Use that sprite as the style reference and create the remaining four. - Recreate all five if you believe that will produce stronger visual cohesion. Cohesion across the cast is more important to me than preserving the existing sprite. The Challenge: Readability at Battle Scale Characters occupy a single tile on a tactical grid, so the sprites become fairly small during gameplay. The face, hair, expression, armor, weapons, and overall personality still need to remain readable. I've found through testing that detailed/painterly artwork with soft gradients becomes muddy when reduced in Unity. The successful sprite instead uses: - Hard, high-contrast facial features and edges - Graphic, deliberate shapes and strong silhouettes - Readable armor and weapon details - Semi-chibi proportions—larger head and slightly compressed body, but not exaggerated traditional chibi - Simplified/exaggerated facial features that remain recognizable at small scale - Transparent backgrounds I can provide the concept art for all five characters, plus the existing successful battle sprite and its original concept art as references. Deliverables 4–5 finished full-body battle sprites with transparent backgrounds. I'll test WIP sprites directly in Unity so we can confirm they remain readable at their actual gameplay size. The final goal is simple: the five characters should remain recognizable at battle scale and look like they were all created as part of the same sprite set. When applying, please include any relevant examples, especially RPG/SRPG characters, expressive small-scale sprites, semi-chibi characters, or cohesive character sets that you may have.
