I build small websites where the interaction is the point, and I write the motion by hand rather than dropping in a player. A recent study of mine is a near-black page holding a single eye. You press and hold; the pupil dilates, the lids close once, and the site is already there behind the blink. One normalized value drives the pupil radius, the lid positions, the stroke weight and the cursor, so nothing can drift out of sync, and the page ships with an inspector that lets you scrub that value and watch every number change. No Lottie, no Rive, no GSAP: inline SVG, CSS, and about 8 KB of JavaScript, with a single Pointer Events path covering mouse, touch and pen. Zero external requests at runtime. That is the work I want more of. The rest of what I do is what makes it survivable in production: - Screenshots at 1280x680, 1440, 1920x1080 and 390 px with zero horizontal overflow, measured rather than assumed - axe-core at zero WCAG 2.2 AA violations, run in every state including the ones hidden behind an interaction - Fonts subset and self-hosted, no third-party requests - prefers-reduced-motion honoured, and a keyboard path that reaches the same place the cursor does The same discipline runs my audit and data work. Recently I built an audit engine that measured 12 of my own production sites in real Chrome and turned up 9 critical defects (a localhost og:image URL in production among them); I fixed all 9 and re-measured to zero. I also ship feedcraft, an open-source CSV validator that turns messy product exports into clean Shopify imports and logs every fix row by row - the code and a sample report are public on my GitHub, and the same engine is in my portfolio below. My reports cite row numbers and pixel measurements, and they always say what was NOT checked. I work from a supplied design, and before you hire me I will tell you what I think the interaction should be and roughly how many hours it is. If part of a brief will not survive contact with a real browser, I say so at the start rather than at delivery. I also take repair work on existing sites when the problem is well defined: mobile overflow, broken layouts and forms, React and Next.js UI bugs. Stack: HTML, CSS, SVG, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, Vite, Cloudflare.

What does a Codeception freelancer do?

A Codeception freelancer builds automated test suites for PHP applications using the Codeception framework to verify software behavior across unit, functional, and acceptance layers. This specialist writes descriptive PHP code that simulates user interactions and API calls to catch bugs before deployment. They configure testing environments to connect with real browsers or database states for accurate validation.

  • Designs and implements comprehensive test suites by writing PHP code that defines specific scenarios for unit logic, functional workflows, and end-to-end user journeys. The freelancer structures these tests within Codeception’s modular architecture to ensure each layer of the application behaves as expected under various conditions. This approach allows teams to isolate failures quickly and maintain high code quality throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Configures suite files and modules to enable browser automation via the WebDriver protocol or API testing through REST modules. This work involves setting up YAML configuration files to define environment variables, browser capabilities, and helper classes that support complex test scenarios. The freelancer ensures that Selenium or other WebDriver servers communicate correctly with the PHP test runner to execute realistic user actions like clicking buttons or filling forms.
  • Executes test runs via command-line interfaces and analyzes output logs to debug failing scenarios using built-in hooks and artifacts. When tests fail, the specialist investigates the root cause by reviewing stack traces, screenshots, or step-by-step execution records generated during the run. They then refine the test code or adjust module settings to resolve conflicts and improve the reliability of the automated coverage.

How to hire a Codeception freelancer on Upwork

Step 1: Post a job

Define your testing requirements clearly to attract qualified candidates who specialize in PHP test automation. Use the Job Post Generator powered by Uma™, Upwork's Mindful AI to draft a precise description. Describe your needs in a few sentences and Uma drafts a job post for the role. You can write a new post, update a saved draft, or reuse an existing post.

  • Specify whether you need unit, functional, or acceptance tests using the Codeception framework.
  • List required modules such as WebDriver for browser automation or REST for API validation.
  • Include details about your current PHP environment and any existing suite configurations.

Step 2: Evaluate candidates

Review portfolios for evidence of structured test suites and clean configuration files. Uma can run instant video interviews and build shortlists with side-by-side comparisons to help you identify top performers quickly.

  • Look for examples of Acceptance.suite.yml files that demonstrate proper module setup.
  • Check for experience integrating Selenium WebDriver with Codeception for real browser testing.
  • Verify their ability to write reusable helpers and extend modules for complex application logic.

Step 3: Interview your top choices

Discuss their approach to debugging failing scenarios and maintaining test stability over time. Interviews can be scheduled and conducted within Upwork Messages with an immediate transcript and summary after each one.

  • Ask how they handle module conflicts when combining different testing layers in one suite.
  • Request examples of how they use tester actors like AcceptanceTester to perform actions.
  • Inquire about their strategy for managing test data and cleanup processes between runs.

Step 4: Agree on scope and begin work

Set clear milestones for delivering specific test cases and configuring the necessary environments. Use Upwork Messages and the contract workroom for communication and project management, plus identity verification, payment protection, hourly tracking, and project funds for security.

  • Define deliverables such as completed test scripts and updated configuration files.
  • Establish a schedule for running tests via CLI and reviewing debug artifacts for failures.
  • Confirm the integration points with your CI pipeline or local development workflow.
