What skills and experiences do you feel make you a good data analyst?

Some key qualities and technical skills to look for in a top data analyst include:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and SAS or SPSS
  • Experience with segmentation techniques, database design, data profiling, and data mining
  • An understanding of data validation methods

Soft skills like problem-solving skills, communication skills, and sound decision-making talents are also essential.

What programming languages and databases are you comfortable working with?

Ensure that the data analyst is comfortable working with the languages and databases at work in your business. Common programming languages include XML, Javascript, Python, and the ETL frameworks, while databases like SQL, SQLite, Db2, and more are also frequently used.

How would you handle situations where you encounter missing data?

Asking this theoretical question can help you understand the analyst's experience and familiarity with the details of the data science field and their decision-making thought process. A contractor might describe strategies like model-based methods or the deletion method and the importance of creating a validation report in the case of missing values.

How would you describe data cleaning?

Asking a technical question like this during an analytics interview can test an analyst's technical knowledge and skill, and it makes for a good on-the-spot check of their education. Alternatively, you might ask about other nuanced elements within this field:

  • Data visualization
  • Data sets
  • Different types of algorithms
  • Logistic regression
  • Pivot tables
  • Common analysis tools
  • The KNN imputation method
  • Standardized and unstandardized coefficients
  • Clustering algorithm types
  • Univariate and multivariate outliers

What elements of this job description most appeal to you and why?

This question will give you insight into what a contractor is looking for in a data analyst job and what elements of the job they’re most skilled in. Listen to the elements that the contractor highlights, and then ask about their experience and preparedness in other areas of the job.

Would you please describe a previous data analysis project you've worked on?

Ask the freelancer about their previous experience performing data analytics, and get details about the project’s design, implementation, and success. Be sure to follow up with questions about challenges the freelancer faced, like data cleaning or working with large data sets or complex data, and how they overcame them.

How do you keep up with data trends?

With data trends and technology constantly changing, a great data analyst needs to stay aware of these changes. Your organization might provide continuing education opportunities, but a contractor who's genuinely motivated and interested in the field can stay self-informed and be an asset to your business.

What professional achievement are you most proud of so far?

Asking about previous achievements can give you important information about a freelancer's potential and talents. Be sure to ask why they're proud of that achievement and what implication the achievement had for a previous employer. This can help to establish a candidate's potential value and may indicate how they could help your business, too.

How have you handled a challenging situation at a previous job, and how do you work under pressure?

Data analysts face multiple challenges, and tight deadlines or high-stakes projects can be stressful. Ask specifically about a challenging situation and how the contractor handled it. A great analyst needs to be able to maintain their focus, prioritize projects, and still ensure accuracy and attention to detail, even if they’re working under stress and tight timelines.

What is your ideal work environment?

Get details on how each candidate has previously worked and the work environments that they most prefer. This is particularly important if you're hiring a data analyst who will be working remotely. In addition, be sure to get details about how the analyst prefers to communicate and work with teams, especially when working at a distance or when engaging with others in different time zones.

As a Senior GIS Analyst and 3D Programmer I am to connect and lead other developers and clients to collaborate, share ideas, and use conceptual and strategic brainstorming to produce accurate results as a team. Having the ability to have extensive knowledge in over 10 different programs with a marketing and production background as well will make me the perfect candidate for your project. The following programs I am an expert with: - AutoCAD 2023, Civil 3D, AutoCAD Map 2023, MeshMixer, REVIT (All Autodesk Programs). These programs can be used for 3D Models of Products, Civil and Architectural Design, and 2D fiber routes, redlines, and DWG conversion between programs for geographical purposes. - SketchUP (Interior/Exterior Design, Floor Plans, Modeling) - All ESRI Programs such as the following: ArcPro, ArcMap, ESRI Online, WebBuilder, Field Maps, Collector, etc. - QGIS - Tool Builder using Model Builder, Python, or SQL. - I am able to work with numerous programs at a time to produce the correct end result. For example, conversions of DWGs in AutoCAD to produce a georeferenced map in ESRI. I work directly with field employees to collect data and organize production on and off the field. I consistently produce 2D and 3D data in ArcPro, ArcMap, and QGIS by creating GDBs, feature classes, DEM/LiDAR data, KMLS, and DWG conversions. Uses 2023 AutoCAD and AutoCAD Map 3D to convert DWGs or other formats into geo-referenced feature classes for ArcPro and ESRI Online. Example include redlines, fiber routes, 3D aerial imagery, 3D buildings, imagery, and vault templates for clients. Produce maps with correct attribute data and feature classes for local data and online ESRI Maps for clients. Strict protocol with Google Fiber development and knowledge of fiber production/design. Use of queries and creation of tools using SQL, Arcade, Python, and Model Builder. Ability to use SQL Server Manager, Microsoft Server Manager, and other services for connecting to servers.
