UK Accountant for Tax Efficiency, VAT & Year-End Accounts (Ongoing, Bookkeeper Already in Place)
Worldwide
Job description: I'm looking for a proactive UK accountant to work alongside my existing bookkeeper on an ongoing basis. The bookkeeping is handled day-to-day — what I need is someone at the next level up: submissions, year-end, oversight of the books, and above all tax-efficiency advice. About the business: Data engineering / IT contracting, run through a VAT-registered limited company (personal service company). What you'll be responsible for: - VAT returns — preparing and submitting on schedule (MTD-compliant). - Year-end accounts & corporation tax — annual accounts and filings to Companies House / HMRC as required. - Reviewing the bookkeeping — sense-checking my bookkeeper's work each period, confirming transactions are categorised correctly and, crucially, in the most tax-efficient way possible. - Tax-efficiency advice (the most important part) I want an accountant who actively hunts for legitimate ways to reduce my tax bill and flags them to me before deadlines, not just at year-end. I'm interested in every allowance and relief available to a business like mine, for example: the annual staff event exemption (the "Christmas party" allowance), trivial benefits, salary/dividend optimisation, employer pension contributions, home-office costs, mileage allowance making use of a spouse's allowances where justified, the Annual Investment Allowance / full expensing on equipment, company cars, the Employment Allowance, R&D relief, and Relevant Life cover. If you think in terms of "here's a legitimate lever we can pull or loophole," we'll get on well. First task — a full tax & deadlines calendar: Your very first job will be to draw up a calendar for the whole year mapping every significant date for the business — VAT submission and payment dates, year-end/accounts filing, corporation tax, PAYE, confirmation statement, etc. On that same calendar I'd like you to mark the tax-efficient actions we should take through the year and when: the staff event/Christmas party, pension contribution deadlines, timing of equipment purchases to use allowances, mileage and home-office claims, trivial-benefit gifts, and any other use-it-or-lose-it items. Think of it as a proactive year-round tax plan, not just a list of deadlines. About you: - HMRC Agent - Up to date on current HMRC rules, VAT, MTD and corporation tax. - Genuinely proactive about tax planning — you bring ideas to me rather than waiting to be asked. - Comfortable reviewing and overseeing bookkeepers work
