Architectural Metal Detailer / Fabrication Designer

We are a bespoke architectural metal fabrication company seeking experienced freelance drafters and fabrication designers to support our projects on a contract, hourly basis. We are building a trusted network of technical professionals who can support projects as needed and become an extension of our team as our workload grows. We are also implementing consistent drawing, fabrication, and specification package standards to improve efficiency and maintain a high level of quality across all projects. Typical Products & Systems: Custom registers and vent covers Decorative laser-cut panels and screens Exterior panel and sunshade systems Gate and fencing components Stair railing panels Cabinet and door inserts Bracket, knife plate, and custom metal assemblies Welded and formed sheet metal products Responsibilities: Create shop drawing packages, including cover sheets, general notes, specification sheets, keyed plans, hardware schedules, assembly details, and other documentation necessary to clearly communicate design intent, scope, and installation requirements to the client Create fabrication packages, including fabrication drawings, BOMs, DXF files for laser cutting, STEP files for assemblies and formed components, and related manufacturing documentation Translate sketches, PDFs, architectural drawings, and markups into shop drawings and fabrication-ready documentation Develop hardware, mounting, assembly, and installation details as required Work within established drawing, fabrication, and specification package standards to maintain consistency and quality across projects Requirements 2+ years of metal fabrication drafting or design experience Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD preferred (Fusion 360 or Autodesk Inventor also considered) Must maintain your own software licenses Experience creating fabrication-ready DXF and STEP files Strong understanding of laser cutting, sheet metal fabrication, welded assemblies, and tube steel construction Ability to read fabrication drawings and construction documents Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills Ability to work independently in a remote environment Preferred Experience: Architectural metal fabrication Commercial and/or residential construction projects Reading architectural and structural drawings Commercial submittal packages and specification documentation Availability & Communication: Our projects range from small drawing revisions to complete shop drawing and fabrication packages. We value responsiveness, clear communication, and the ability to meet agreed-upon deadlines. Typical project timelines may range from one to two days to several weeks depending on scope. We are looking for professionals interested in building a long-term working relationship. As project volume grows, there may be opportunities for increased workload and ongoing collaboration.
