Microbiology Research Mentor (High School Research Internship) About the Project YouthBridge Global Education is seeking an experienced researcher, academic, PhD candidate, or postgraduate student in Microbiology to mentor a high school student through a one-month research internship. The objective of the internship is to guide the student in producing a 4,000 - 8,000 word literature review on a selected Microbiology topic. This is a secondary research project only - no laboratory work, experiments, or primary data collection are required. The mentor's role is to teach the student how to conduct academic research, critically analyse scientific literature, and write a university-level literature review, rather than writing the paper for them. Potential Research Topics The student will choose one of the following topics: Scope of Work The selected mentor will: - Guide the student in selecting and refining a research topic - Teach the fundamentals of academic research and literature reviews - Recommend relevant academic journals, books, and research papers - Help the student identify credible scientific sources - Explain how to critically analyse and synthesise published research - Provide feedback on research structure, academic writing, and scientific communication - Guide the student on referencing and bibliography (APA, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, etc.) - Review draft submissions and provide constructive feedback - Ensure the student independently completes a well-structured literature review This is a mentorship role. The student is expected to complete all writing themselves. --- Meeting Schedule The mentor will meet the student: Monday, Wednesday and Friday Approximately 45 - 60 minutes per session over 4 weeks (12 scheduled meetings). Additional meetings may be arranged if required. Meetings will be conducted virtually via Google Meet. A representative from YouthBridge Global Education may attend meetings for quality assurance and student support. Final Student Deliverables By the end of the internship, the student should produce: - Research Proposal - Annotated Bibliography - 4,000 - 8,000 word Literature Review - Complete references and bibliography - Final reflection on the research process --- Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who has: - A Master's degree, PhD, or is currently pursuing a PhD in Microbiology or a closely related discipline - Experience conducting academic research and publishing scholarly work - Strong scientific writing and literature review skills - Excellent spoken and written English - Previous teaching, tutoring, or mentoring experience (preferred) - The ability to explain complex microbiological concepts to motivated high school students --- When Applying, Please Include 1.
