Build a Sensor Glove Prototype for ASL Gesture Recognition
Worldwide
**Project: Build a Sensor Glove Prototype for ASL Gesture Recognition** **Overview** I'm an 8th grade student working on a Regeneron ISEF science fair project. I need a freelancer to build the physical hardware prototype of a sensor glove that reads hand gestures. The glove will be used to collect training data for a machine learning classifier that recognizes American Sign Language signs. I will handle all the machine learning and software myself. I need help with the hardware build only. --- **What I need built** A working sensor glove with the following components: - 1x thin knit glove (base) - 5x flex sensors (2.2 inch), one per finger, routed along the back of each finger - 1x MPU-6050 IMU breakout board mounted on back of hand - 1x Arduino Nano reading all sensors - Voltage divider circuit (10k ohm resistors) for each flex sensor - All wiring routed cleanly along glove seams, hidden where possible - Arduino Nano and small breadboard mounted in a fabric wrist pouch sewn onto the glove - USB cable exiting from wrist pouch for connection to Raspberry Pi The Arduino should be pre-loaded with sketch code that reads all 5 flex sensors and the IMU at 50Hz and outputs comma-separated values over serial at 115200 baud. I will provide the exact code. --- **Deliverables** 1. Fully assembled and wired glove 2. All 5 flex sensors reading correctly and independently (verified in Arduino Serial Monitor) 3. MPU-6050 reading accelerometer and gyroscope values correctly 4. Arduino sketch uploaded and outputting clean CSV data over USB 5. Short video showing the glove in use with Serial Monitor open confirming all sensor readings change when fingers bend 6. Brief notes on any wiring decisions or substitutions made --- **Skills needed** - Arduino / embedded systems - Basic electronics and breadboard wiring - Soldering (light, for sensor connections) - Comfortable working with wearable/fabric-mounted electronics --- **Budget and timeline** Budget: $80-120 fixed price (I will supply the component list; freelancer sources or I ship components depending on location) Timeline: 2-3 weeks --- **To apply, please answer these three questions:** 1. Have you worked with flex sensors or IMUs before? If so, describe briefly. 2. Have you built wearable electronics or mounted components on fabric? 3. What is your approximate turnaround time for a project like this? Applications without answers to these questions will not be considered. --- **Additional context** This is a student science fair project, not a commercial product. I am a middle school student targeting Regeneron ISEF. The glove does not need to look perfect but it needs to work reliably. Clean wiring and solid connections matter more than aesthetics. I will be wearing this glove for months of data collection so durability is important.
