CFD Engineer – OpenFOAM Urban Vegetation Simulations (AI/ML Dataset Generation)

Summary

We are developing AI-enhanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models for a blue-green urban infrastructure project. The objective is to generate high-quality CFD datasets using OpenFOAM and subsequently train machine-learning models for rapid prediction of vegetation cooling effects in urban environments. The work involves developing and running CFD simulations for urban vegetation scenarios, including green façades and urban canopies, using OpenFOAM. We are looking for an experienced CFD engineer with OpenFOAM expertise to support simulation setup, validation, and data generation. Successful collaboration may lead to future opportunities beyond the scope of this project. Phase 1 (Current Advertisement-1 month duration): • Setup and validate baseline OpenFOAM cases for two urban vegetation scenarios • Review mesh, boundary conditions and solver settings • Provide documentation to ensure reproducibility Phase 2 (Subject to successful completion of Phase 1 and with a higher budget-3 months): • Generate approximately 70 CFD simulations through parameter variation • Perform quality assurance of simulation results • Deliver simulation datasets and metadata for subsequent machine-learning training Required Skills • Strong OpenFOAM experience • CFD modelling of environmental, atmospheric, or urban flows • Linux and scripting (Python/Bash) • Experience with automated simulation workflows • Ability to work independently and document simulation setups Preferred Skills • Vegetation, porous-media, or urban climate modelling in OpenFOAM • Python programming • PyTorch or TensorFlow • Surrogate modelling or reduced-order models • Physics-informed machine learning • CFD data processing and feature engineering Nice-to-Have • Urban climate simulations • Green façade or green canopy modelling • HPC workflows • Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) Additional Information The selected candidate will work closely with our team and receive technical guidance and feedback throughout the project, including support on CFD setup, simulation workflows and result interpretation.
