Code Review Engineer

Code Review Engineer / Quality and Release Engineer About the role: We are scaling engineering output using agentic coding tools (Cursor, automated PR generation) combined with a tiered risk review process. As ticket creation and initial code generation become faster and more automated, the bottleneck has shifted to review throughput and release confidence. We're hiring a Code Review Engineer to own the middle tier of that process: reviewing pull requests for correctness, risk, and quality before they ship, while also contributing hands-on code for lower-risk work. This is primarily a quality and gatekeeping role, not a pure feature-building role. Expect roughly 70 percent review and QA-oriented work, 30 percent hands-on building (mostly tier one, low-risk tickets). What you'll do: - Review "tier two" pull requests (moderate blast radius, touches shared code, not customer-critical or irreversible) using our test scripts and QA dashboard as your primary playbook - Proactively flag anything that smells like it should be escalated to "tier three" (sensitive areas) rather than making that call yourself - Communicate review findings clearly and promptly, including ambiguous or borderline cases, rather than executing quietly - Help build and maintain automated test coverage for critical paths, in partnership with the founder - Take on tier one tickets and small build work directly when review load allows - Help refine and evolve the risk-tiering criteria as the codebase and product grow What we're looking for: - Strong general engineering judgment, ideally from having shipped and maintained production Rails applications, and having been burned by production incidents before - Genuine interest in the "quality gatekeeper" side of engineering, not someone who sees review as a lesser task than building - Strong proactive communication skills; comfortable raising concerns and flagging risk without being prompted - Comfortable working with AI-generated code and agentic development workflows (Cursor, automated PR review tools) - Experience with Ruby on Rails production systems preferred What success looks like: - We can focus review attention almost exclusively on the highest-stakes 15 percent of changes (sensitive areas) - Tier two pull requests move through review quickly and reliably without quality regressions - Risk-tiering criteria stays current and well-calibrated as the system evolves
