About The Sludge Hub & Company The Sludge Hub & Company is a 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to the restoration of abandoned mine lands and the development of ecological prosperity in the post-coal era. We serve as a matchmaker between abandoned mine lands and the researchers, conservationists, and entrepreneurs with innovative ideas on how to recast the scraps of coal’s past into a brighter Appalachian future. Position Summary The Temporary Communications Officer will play a vital role in maintaining The Sludge Hub & Company's communications activities during a short-term staffing transition. Working closely with the Director of Communications and the broader team, this role will support ongoing communications projects, stakeholder engagement, content development, and outreach efforts to ensure continuity of operations. The position is largely autonomous and requires the ability to quickly learn existing processes, manage assigned tasks independently, and maintain established communication standards with minimal oversight. Responsibilities Content Creation: Assist in developing engaging content for various communication channels, including the website (sludgehub.org), social media platforms, and newsletters. This will involve gathering articles, blog posts, creating visual content, and modifying video content. Social Media Management: Support the management of The Sludge Hub & Company's social media presence, including scheduling posts, monitoring engagement, and identifying opportunities to expand our reach. Website Maintenance: Assist with updates and maintenance of the organization's website. Outreach Support: Provide support for outreach activities, such as pushing out materials onto listservs, messenger groups, and other select locations. Systems and Tools The Communications Officer will interface with various systems and tools, including: Social media management platforms (Various) Website content management systems (Wix) Canva Google Workspace (Drive, Docs, Sheets) Zoho Social TogglTrack Qualifications Strong written communication skills Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to work independently and create team cohesiveness through communication Proficiency in social media platforms Interest in environmental issues, community development, and non-profit work
