Content Writer and Strategist (Substance Use and Recovery)
Worldwide
We're looking for a writer and journalist who wants to help connect millions of people to care through one of the leading online resources for recovery. This role focuses on researching and creating content that helps people who are often overwhelmed, uncertain, or in a crisis decide on the type of treatment that is best for them. Your work will empower individuals facing substance use challenges to understand their options, make informed decisions, and take next steps. You’ll also be part of a team that works closely with leading clinicians, public health experts, and nonprofits to ensure the information we provide is clear and built to support people in real moments of need. Company: Start Your Recovery helps people facing substance use challenges—and their loved ones—find clear, trustworthy information when they need it most. We know that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the challenges faced by those dealing with substance use issues and we aim to break through the noise to offer a single source of reliable information at any stage of the recovery journey. We work with leading clinicians and experts in substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery to write, validate, and present the best information available as a resource people can turn to in a moment of need. Our work combines public health research, first-party data gathering, and clinical expertise to help people navigate addiction treatment with confidence. Job Summary: We’re looking for a writer with strong editorial instincts and a deep connection to the recovery space to help create content that is clear, accessible, and useful. This role focuses on creating content that helps people understand substance use, treatment options, and what to expect—so they can make sense of their options, make informed decisions, and take next steps. This role is journalistic at its core. You’ll investigate treatment providers, review data, and create content with a voice that is both authoritative and empathetic. You’ll translate complex or clinical information into facility descriptions and additional content that feels human and easy to navigate. This role involves consistent weekly writing and editing output, often across multiple pieces at once but focused primarily on facility descriptions. We are looking for the right voice and perspective first. If you have lived experience and strong writing instincts, we want to hear from you—even if your background doesn't perfectly match the role description. What We’re Looking For: - Connection to the space (strongly preferred): You have direct or close personal experience with substance use, recovery, or mental health—whether through your own journey, as a supporter of someone else, or through past work experience. - Strong writing instincts: You know how to structure information, keep things concise, and write clear, helpful content that explains complex or sensitive topics in a direct, human-centered way. - Journalistic approach: You know how to tell a story, verify a fact, and write content that is accurate, clear, and genuinely useful. You're comfortable reviewing data for stories, researching public information, and interviewing people. - Ability to work independently: You’re comfortable managing your own workload, prioritizing tasks, and making progress without constant direction. - Comfort using (or willingness to learn) AI tools: You are comfortable with or open to learning how to use AI tools to help with research, increase efficiency, and improve your writing. We'll provide you with access to tools and guidance on how we use them to support our work. Key Responsibilities: - Facility profiles (key focus initially): Research, evaluate, write, and edit accurate, empathetic descriptions of substance use treatment facilities to help users compare their options. - General content creation: Research, write, and edit helpful, accessible articles and resources related to mental health, substance use, and the recovery journey. - Strategic communications: Collaborate with the Content Team to support broader initiatives, including partnership materials, social media outreach, and email re-engagement campaigns. Qualifications: - Professional experience in journalism, reporting, writing, editorial roles, or health communications. - A deep, nuanced understanding of the recovery landscape. - Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks. - Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Public Health, Journalism, or a related field preferred. Equivalent lived or professional experience is strongly considered.
