Controller (Part-Time, Monthly Review, Multi-Client)

Description: Cooks Bookkeeping is a US-based bookkeeping firm serving ecommerce, retail, and CPG brands. Our bookkeeping team performs the monthly close across all client accounts. We're hiring a part-time Controller to review that work each month: quality control over the close, the chart of accounts, and the supporting workpapers, with written review notes back to the team and adjustments needed for the WP, Recons and JEs What you'll do: Monthly review of the completed close for every client: revenue and expense reconciliations, accruals, GL account reconciliations, clearing accounts, AR/AP workpapers Review revenue recognition for multi-channel ecommerce, including deferred sales/revenue from Amazon (settlement timing, unsettled orders at cutoff, reserve holds), Shopify, TikTok Shop, and wholesale/retail channels Review COGS and inventory accounting, including channel-level tie-outs Chart of accounts review and maintenance for each client: structure, naming consistency, channel mapping, misclassifications, and recommended changes Workpaper review: formula integrity, source tie-back to bank statements and platform reports, documentation quality, and whether the narrative matches the numbers Confirm prior-period accruals reversed and prior review points cleared before signing off on the month Deliver a short written review memo per client per month: findings, required adjustments, and open items, with coaching notes for the bookkeeping team Flag discrepancies explicitly; we never force numbers to tie Requirements: 5+ years of accounting experience, including review or controller-level responsibility, with significant time in ecommerce, retail, or CPG Hands-on experience reviewing Amazon, Shopify, and TikTok Shop settlement/payout reconciliations Solid understanding of accrual accounting and deferred revenue treatment (not just cash-basis categorization) Strong QuickBooks Online skills, including comfort with Transaction Detail by Account and other transaction-level reports for verification Advanced Excel (structured workpapers, formulas, tie-outs) Strong written English; review notes and memos are the core deliverable of this role Reliable availability with overlap into US Central time hours Details: Part-time, long-term engagement $500/month flat, covering the full monthly review cycle for all current client accounts (review of close, COA, and workpapers plus the written review memos) This will also include additional work beyond the monthly review scope (cleanup reviews, new client onboarding review, special projects) Growth opportunity as the firm scales, including expanded scope as the client base grows To apply: briefly explain what you would look for when reviewing a bookkeeper's Amazon revenue workpaper at month-end when a settlement period spans the cutoff date, including the specific errors you would expect to catch.
