Czech SDH Subtitle Adapter Needed (Large Series Project, Ongoing Work)
Worldwide
## Overview We're looking for detail-oriented freelancers to adapt existing Czech-language subtitle files (DFXP/SRT) into SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing) compliant versions for a TV series project. This is an SDH *adaptation*, not transcription or translation — dialogue and timing already exist; your job is to add accessibility elements on top of them. Czech speakers strongly preferred, but non-Czech speakers with strong attention to detail and subtitling experience will be considered, since the core task relies heavily on visual/audio cue judgment rather than language comprehension alone. This is part of a larger multi-episode project (~4000 minutes total runtime) being split across several freelancers, with more work available on an ongoing basis for strong performers. ## What You'll Be Doing - Adding speaker ID tags (in Czech, lowercase, square brackets) wherever a speaker cannot be visually identified — off-screen, back turned, obscured, too-wide a shot, etc. - Using generic identifiers (e.g. muž, žena, chlapec, dívka, mužský hlas) for unidentified characters, switching to the character's name the moment it's spoken on screen by anyone (not before) - Correctly separating multiple speakers within a subtitle block using dash conventions, one speaker per line - Adding relevant sound effect cues (lowercase, square brackets, e.g. [bouchnutí dveří]) for off-screen or non-visible sounds that carry narrative weight — not for sounds already obvious from the visuals - Adding music cues, including background music descriptions and song title identifiers where known - Subtitling same-language song lyrics using ♪ note symbols at the start and end of each lyric subtitle block - Preserving original subtitle timing and structure wherever possible — only adjusting timing or splitting segments when genuinely required for SDH compliance (e.g. a block can't physically fit 2+ speaker turns within the 2-line cap) - Maintaining a running character/speaker reference list across episodes for consistent naming and tag usage - Flagging (not fixing) any pre-existing timing/sync issues found in the source file ## What We're NOT Asking For - Translation or transcription from scratch — dialogue text is provided - Re-timing existing dialogue for sync accuracy — that's flagged to us, not corrected by you - Condensing dialogue beyond what's needed for technical line-length/CPS limits ## You Should Have - Experience with SDH/closed captioning conventions (or strong general subtitling experience and a fast learning curve) - Comfort working with DFXP and/or SRT files - Familiarity with Subtitle Edit (or willingness to use it) — autobreak, line-length, and CPS settings will be relevant - A sharp eye for visual detail — judging on-screen vs. off-screen, visible vs. inferable sound, speaker identifiability - Reliability with deadlines and clear communication if something in a file looks off ## Provided to You - Client-specific SDH style guide - Glossary of standardized Czech sound effect and music cue terminology - Source DFXP/SRT files with existing dialogue and timing - Episode reference materials as needed for character continuity ## Rate & Scope Rate is set by the end client and will be discussed directly with qualified applicants. Please apply with your relevant experience and, if available, a sample of prior SDH/captioning work. ## To Apply Please include: 1. Relevant SDH/subtitling experience (and Czech proficiency level, if applicable) 2. Familiarity with Subtitle Edit or equivalent tools 3. A short note on how you'd handle a case where a speaker starts off-screen and finishes on-screen within the same line (this tells us a lot about fit for this kind of detail work)
