Design and Develop an Interactive Global Giving Map for a Nonprofit Website
Worldwide
The Disaster Recovery International Foundation is seeking an experienced web developer or interactive data-visualization specialist to redesign our Global Giving Map. We need a visually compelling map that shows the charitable projects and organizations we have funded around the world and that our staff can easily update year after year. Current map: https://foundation.drii.org/global-giving/map/ Examples of our annual reports: https://foundation.drii.org/annual-review/ Foundation news and project stories: https://foundation.drii.org/news/ Project Goals This project has two related goals: Interactive Website Map Create a responsive, interactive global map for our WordPress website. Visitors should be able to: View the countries and communities where the Foundation has funded projects. Click a map marker to see the organization or project name, location, year funded, a short description, and an optional image. Click “Read More” to open the project’s related DRI Foundation News article. Filter projects by year. Ideally filter projects by program or cause, such as disaster relief, community resilience, food security, education, health, veterans, or other categories provided by the Foundation. Easily identify locations containing more than one funded project. Use the map effectively on desktop computers, tablets, and mobile phones. The map should feel compelling and impact-focused—not like a basic directory of locations. Annual Report Map Create a coordinated version of the map that can be included in the Foundation’s annual report. We need: A polished, print-ready map suitable for a full-page or two-page annual report layout. High-resolution files appropriate for both print and PDF publication. Ideally, an easy way to filter the interactive map by year and export or generate an updated annual-report version each year. An editable or reusable annual-report template so the Foundation does not need to redesign the map from scratch annually. Space for a QR code or URL directing annual-report readers to the interactive online map. Required Administrative Features Should include fields such as: Organization or project name City, state/province, and country Map coordinates, preferably generated automatically from the address Year funded Program or cause category Short project description Optional image Direct URL to the related DRI Foundation News article We will provide the available project data and corresponding article URLs in a spreadsheet. The system must support projects added year after year without requiring the map to be rebuilt. Please explain whether you recommend managing the data through WordPress, a spreadsheet, Airtable, or another simple system. Key Deliverables Approved map design or prototype Fully functional interactive map installed on our WordPress website Print-ready annual-report map Testing across major browsers and mobile devices Technical and Design Expectations Clean, professional design consistent with the DRI Foundation website and branding Fast loading and good performance Accessible design, including keyboard navigation and readable map information where practical Map-marker clustering or another clear solution for areas with multiple projects A scalable structure that can accommodate many years of projects No ongoing dependence on the original developer for routine updates All third-party tools and recurring costs must be identified and approved before implementation Who We Are Looking For The ideal freelancer has experience with: Interactive web maps WordPress development Mapbox, Leaflet, Google Maps, or a comparable mapping platform Data filtering and visualization Responsive and accessible web design Print-ready nonprofit or annual-report graphics Creating simple administrative tools for nontechnical users Proposal Requirements Please include: Examples of interactive maps you have designed or developed. A brief explanation of the technology you recommend for this project and why. Your estimated timeline. Your proposed fixed price and milestone breakdown. Any expected recurring fees for mapping services, plugins, APIs, hosting, or licenses. What information or access you would need from us. Please begin your proposal with the words “Global Giving Map” so we know you have read the complete description.
