Electrical Engineer | BESS Controls, PCB Design & Generator Integration
Worldwide
About the Project We're building the next generation of intelligent Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for mobile, off-grid, and remote power applications. Our long-term vision is to develop complete microgrid solutions that seamlessly integrate battery storage with multiple power sources—including solar, wind, hydroelectric, utility power, and engine-driven generators. These systems will be deployed anywhere reliable electrical power is needed, including: Remote construction sites Farms and agricultural operations Irrigation and well pump systems Mining operations Live events and concerts Television and film production Telecommunications sites Emergency backup power Disaster response Military and remote research installations EV charging in off-grid locations Any location where dependable portable power is required Our battery systems must intelligently manage multiple charging sources while maximizing efficiency, minimizing fuel consumption, and reducing unnecessary generator run time. Project Objective We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to design the electronic control hardware that serves as the communication gateway between our Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and external power sources. The primary deliverable is a custom PCB and control interface capable of communicating with generators and, in future product versions, renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro systems. The control hardware must be capable of: Monitoring battery state of charge and overall system health. Automatically requesting charging when battery levels fall below user-defined thresholds. Communicating with an external power source to initiate charging. Featuring an Auto Generator Start (AGS) interface that can automatically start compatible generators when charging is required. Continuously monitoring charging conditions and battery status. Automatically shutting down the generator or other charging source once charging is complete or target conditions have been met. Supporting communication with Battery Management Systems (BMS), inverters, PLCs, and other energy management equipment. Providing a scalable architecture that can support additional charging sources and communication protocols as our microgrid platform evolves. Long-Term Vision This is more than a single PCB project. Our goal is to build an intelligent energy management platform capable of coordinating multiple distributed energy resources within a microgrid. Future systems will intelligently determine the most efficient energy source available—whether solar, wind, hydro, generator, or utility power—and automatically manage charging, battery storage, and load demand. The electronics developed during this project will become the foundation of that platform, enabling reliable communication between energy sources, battery storage, and control systems while maintaining safe operation and compliance with applicable UL standards. We're looking for an engineer who enjoys solving complex real-world power integration challenges and wants to help build a scalable platform that can grow from today's generator-integrated BESS into tomorrow's fully automated, multi-source microgrid solutions. Your experience with CAN Bus, Modbus, RS-485, Ethernet, or similar communication protocols. Details of your experience designing products to meet UL standards and participating in UL certification or compliance efforts. Your availability and rate.
