Fractional Director of Finance & Administration (Nonprofit) About Us The Evolve Foundation is a growing 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating workforce development opportunities for justice-impacted and underserved communities through careers in the clean energy industry. We partner with employers, training providers, government agencies, and community organizations to remove barriers to employment while helping participants build sustainable careers. As our organization continues to grow, we're seeking an experienced financial leader to help build the financial infrastructure necessary to scale responsibly. We already work with: A CPA/accounting firm Legal counsel ADP Payroll Grant funders and external partners We're looking for someone who can serve as an extension of our executive leadership team by providing strategic financial guidance and helping us build strong internal financial and administrative systems. Think of this role as a trusted advisor who helps leadership make smart financial decisions—not someone who simply records transactions. About the Role You will work directly with the President and Executive Director to oversee and strengthen our organization's financial operations, administrative systems, payroll processes, employee benefits, grant compliance, budgeting, and long-term financial planning. This is an ongoing fractional engagement with significant opportunity to grow into a long-term strategic partnership. Estimated Commitment Approximately 10–20 hours per month initially Flexible schedule Remote Responsibilities Financial Leadership Develop annual organizational budgets Monitor financial performance Create executive financial dashboards Forecast cash flow Evaluate organizational financial health Advise leadership on strategic financial decisions Build financial systems that support organizational growth Payroll & Human Resources Administration Provide strategic oversight and recommendations related to: Payroll administration Employee classifications Compensation structures PTO policies Payroll compliance Employee onboarding processes HR administration best practices Benefits Administration Advise leadership regarding employee benefits, including: SIMPLE IRA vs. Safe Harbor 401(k) Retirement plans Health insurance Workers' compensation Disability insurance Life insurance Employee benefits strategy Grant Financial Management Grant budgeting Restricted fund management Grant compliance Financial reporting Audit preparation Allowable cost monitoring Financial documentation Financial Operations Develop and improve: Financial policies and procedures Internal controls Purchasing policies Approval workflows Financial reporting systems Budget monitoring processes Organizational financial documentation Strategic Advisory Serve as an executive advisor by helping leadership answer questions such as: Can we sustainably hire another employee? Should we lease or purchase equipment? Which retirement plan is best for our organization? How should grant funding be allocated? What financial risks should we anticipate? What financial systems should we implement next? How should we structure future organizational growth? Qualifications We're looking for someone with experience in many of the following areas: 5+ years of finance leadership experience Fractional CFO, Director of Finance, Controller, or Finance Director experience Strong nonprofit financial management experience Grant accounting and compliance Budget development Financial forecasting Payroll administration Employee benefits administration Financial policies and procedures Internal controls Audit preparation Board financial reporting Cash flow management Preferred experience includes: QuickBooks Online ADP Workforce Now Federal or state grant-funded organizations Workforce development or nonprofit organizations What Success Looks Like Within your first 90 days, we'd like you to: Review our current financial systems Identify operational gaps and opportunities Recommend improvements Strengthen our financial policies Review payroll and employee benefits Improve budgeting and forecasting Become a trusted advisor to executive leadership Our Leadership Team You'll work directly with: President (Strategy, fundraising, organizational growth) Executive Director (Operations, partnerships, external relationships) Program Director (Program implementation) You'll also collaborate with our CPA, payroll provider, legal counsel, and grant partners. You think beyond accounting and focus on creating systems that help organizations grow sustainably. You're proactive, strategic, collaborative, and comfortable working with mission-driven organizations.
