Fractional product marketing expert for established B2B SaaS company
Worldwide
We are Time Doctor (timedoctor . com), a fully remote B2B SaaS company: time tracking and workforce analytics for distributed teams. We have a lean but strong marketing team who are fast and fun to work with, but what we don't have is a product marketing specialist. We’d like to add a fractional product marketing expert to support our team as needed. Three things are happening at once this year: 1. We are sharpening our market focus onto a narrower set of industries and segments 2. We have a major release of our core platform coming 3. We are bringing a genuinely new product to market, adjacent to what we sell today Each of those needs product marketing work we want to bring you in for. Important: this is not an end-to-end, six-month, discovery-to-launch consulting engagement. We have done a lot of the work already. We have win/loss analysis, ICP research by segment and region, customer call data, churn and retention analysis, competitive research, and a clear internal strategy. We are not looking for someone to run a heavyweight process from scratch, produce a 60-page deck, and hand it over. We want someone who can look at what we already have, tell us where it's wrong or thin, and then either advise us or build the thing. Some weeks that's a 45-minute call where you pressure-test a pricing decision. Other weeks it's writing the messaging framework, the one-pager, and the battlecard yourself. You need to be genuinely good at both modes and comfortable switching between them. What you'd actually work on Our top three priorities, in order: 1. Positioning and messaging refresh for a new market focus. We are narrowing who we sell to. The messaging architecture needs to follow, split by segment and by region, not one global message. 2. Messaging for a major product release. Positioning, messaging framework, launch narrative, sales and CS enablement, launch-page and email copy. 3. Positioning and GTM foundation for a new product. Category framing, brand architecture (standalone vs. sub-brand), ICP definition, packaging and pricing options, and the launch plan. This is the piece where we most need someone who has actually done it before rather than read about it. Beyond those, ad hoc work as it comes up: website content updates, competitive battlecards, objection handling, pricing and packaging options, win/loss synthesis into message changes, and website copy for priority pages. How we work with you - Direct collaboration with our marketing team and our Director of Marketing. You are not managed at arm's length and you are not handed briefs to fill in. We consider you one of the team. - We move fast and we prefer the smallest testable version of a message change over a big-bang rebrand. If your instinct is a three-month workshop series, we're not a fit. - We ask for opinions and we expect pushback. If you think a positioning decision is wrong, say so with a reason. - Async-first. Slack, Asana and Google Workspace. We'll bring you into the specific threads and docs you need. Must-haves - 8+ years in B2B SaaS product marketing, with real ownership of positioning and launches - Demonstrable pricing and packaging experience. You have built and defended packaging options and lived with the outcome. - You have taken a new product to market, ideally one entering a category adjacent to the company's existing product, where the hard problem was framing rather than features - Experience across both sales-led and product-led / self-serve motions, and across SMB through mid-market. You understand why blended messaging is wrong for everyone. - Global market experience. You have written or adapted messaging for multiple regions and can explain why a message that works in the US fails in Brazil or APAC. - You write finished copy, not outlines of copy. A crisp one-pager, a battlecard, and a homepage headline that all sound like the same brand. - AI is in your daily workflow, specifically. Not "I've used ChatGPT for research." You use AI for research synthesis, competitive monitoring, message variant generation, and call-data mining, and you have a view on where it produces garbage. You also understand that buyers now shortlist vendors through AI assistants before a vendor knows the deal exists, and that being the cited answer is a positioning problem, not just an SEO one. - Comfortable working in EST hours at minimum. Based in the Americas preferably. Nice to have - Experience in workforce software, HR tech, ops software, or anything sold to an Operations or IT leader - Experience with products that carry a category reputation challenge you had to message around - Experience selling into back office, shared services or outsourcing businesses (BPOs) - Experience with AI product pricing and packaging What we're NOT looking for - Agencies or shops. We want one person we work with directly. - Generalist marketing consultants who list product marketing among fifteen services - Someone who only does strategy decks and hands off. You need to care whether the message lands and be willing to write it yourself. - Someone who only does execution and needs to be told exactly what to produce - Full-time availability seekers. This is genuinely part time but has room to grow - Anyone who needs a formal brief before they'll engage. We'll give you context and a problem; you dig in. Logistics - Hourly, ongoing, under 20 hrs/week. Realistically expect a light steady base with spikes around the two launches. - Starting with a 3-month engagement. We fully expect this to continue and grow with the right person, and we'd rather build one long relationship than re-hire every quarter. - We will set a weekly hours cap on the contract so the commitment is predictable for both of us. - There will be a small paid test project as part of our hiring process, tied to one of the three priorities above. To apply Skip the template - we want to hear from YOU. We will read the short, specific proposals and ignore the long, generic ones. Answer the five screening questions. In the first two lines of your proposal, tell us which of our three priorities you are strongest on and which you are weakest on. We trust the people who name a weakness. Please include one link to a positioning, messaging, or launch artifact you personally wrote. Redacted or anonymized is completely fine. We would rather see one real thing than a list of logos. We look forward to hearing from you!
