French Proofreader / Editor Needed for German-to-French Translated Fiction Manuscripts

We are looking for an experienced French proofreader/editor to join our international publishing and translation team. We work on fiction manuscripts that have been translated from German into French. For this role, strong French editing skills are essential, but we are also specifically looking for someone who understands German well enough to compare the French translation against the German source text when needed. The goal is not only to correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation, but also to make sure the French manuscript reads naturally, fluently, and professionally for French-speaking readers, while staying faithful to the meaning, tone, and atmosphere of the German original. Language Pair German → French Native-level French is required. Strong German comprehension is required. About the Work You will proofread and edit full-length fiction manuscripts translated from German into French. We are especially interested in proofreaders/editors with experience in: • Fantasy • Romance / romantasy • Thrillers • Contemporary fiction • Long-form fiction • Literary proofreading • Translation revision • Manuscript polishing The ideal candidate has a strong sense for narrative flow, character voice, tone, rhythm, and natural French prose. Your Responsibilities You will: • Proofread French manuscripts translated from German • Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and typos • Improve awkward, literal, or unnatural phrasing • Check the French text against the German source when needed • Make sure the French reads smoothly and naturally • Preserve the author’s voice, tone, and narrative style • Maintain consistency in names, terminology, fantasy terms, and worldbuilding • Identify unclear or inaccurate passages and suggest improvements • Work with glossaries and editorial notes when provided • Use Track Changes in Microsoft Word or Google Docs Important This is not just a basic typo check. We are looking for someone who can proofread with a strong editorial eye and help polish translated fiction so it feels like a natural, engaging French novel. Experience with fiction, literary proofreading, translation revision, or manuscript editing is required. Applications focused mainly on technical, legal, academic, or business proofreading are unfortunately not the right fit for this role.
