Beyond the Athlete (BTA) is a tax-exempt nonprofit focused on expanding access, development and opportunity for young female athletes through sports, mentorship, leadership and educational opportunities. Our current basketball platform serves 160+ female athletes across approximately 18 teams throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington, with additional athletes participating in camps, clinics and training programs. We have also committed more than $65,000 toward scholarships and financial assistance to help reduce barriers to participation. We are looking for an experienced grant writer and funding strategist to help us build and execute a strong national funding strategy. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR We want someone who can do more than write applications for grants we find ourselves. The ideal candidate can help us: * Research and identify strong national, regional and corporate funding opportunities * Determine whether BTA is genuinely competitive before we invest time applying * Build and maintain a prioritized grant pipeline * Research foundations, corporate giving programs and prior grantees * Write Letters of Inquiry and full grant applications * Develop compelling program narratives and funding requests * Help prepare grant budgets and supporting materials * Track deadlines, submissions and follow-up requirements * Identify relationship-based and invitation-only opportunities * Help improve BTA's overall grant readiness * Pursue equipment and in-kind opportunities when appropriate FUNDING AREAS Potential funding areas include: * Girls and women's sports * Youth sports access and participation * Youth development * Financial barriers and underserved youth * Mentorship * Female leadership * Education and college readiness * Health, wellness and physical activity * Confidence and belonging * After-school programming * Equipment access * Coaching and training * Career and leadership development We are particularly interested in candidates who understand that many of our best opportunities may come from youth development, education, girls' empowerment and community foundations, rather than organizations specifically labeled as sports funders. ABOUT OUR DIRECTION While competitive basketball is currently our primary platform, BTA's mission is broader. Our funding story is: ACCESS → DEVELOPMENT → MENTORSHIP → OPPORTUNITY → IMPACT BEYOND SPORTS We are developing fundable initiatives around sports access, keeping girls engaged in athletics, equipment assistance, mentorship, leadership development and college/career readiness. We want to build a legitimate 12-36 month national funding pipeline, not simply apply for random grants. We are also interested in corporate foundations, family foundations, sports philanthropy, professional athlete foundations, equipment donations and strategic corporate partnerships. IDEAL CANDIDATE We are especially interested in someone with experience in one or more of the following: * Nonprofit grant writing * Foundation prospect research * Youth development * Youth sports or sports philanthropy * Girls/women-focused organizations * Education or mentoring programs * Corporate philanthropy * National foundation grants * Program development * Grant budgets and reporting Experience specifically in youth sports is helpful but not required. Proven success identifying and winning grants for growing nonprofits is more important. PLEASE ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS IN YOUR PROPOSAL 1. How many years of professional grant-writing experience do you have? 2. Approximately how much grant funding have you helped secure? 3. What is the largest individual grant you have helped secure? 4. Have you worked with youth development, sports, education, mentoring or girls/women-focused nonprofits? 5. Please provide 2-3 examples of funders or grants you've successfully worked with. 6. Do you conduct grant prospect research yourself or primarily write applications for opportunities provided by clients? 7. How do you determine whether a nonprofit is realistically competitive for a grant before applying? 8. What would your first 30 days working with BTA look like? We are open to starting with a defined project and developing an ongoing relationship with the right person. Please do not send a generic proposal. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate real grant research, strategy and writing experience and who can help us build a sustainable funding pipeline as BTA grows.
