Graphical Abstract + Infographics for academic paper on ocean governance
Worldwide
*Background / Context The BBNJ Agreement establishes a new framework for conserving marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) — the high seas, which make up the majority of the world's ocean. Implementing it will require closer cooperation between existing international frameworks and bodies, but the specific mechanisms for this cooperation are still undefined. Our paper uses a case study from the North-East Atlantic where regional cooperation for area-based management is already happening across multiple organisations to reflect on lessons learnt from this process and to identify five recommendations for others working to implement the new Agreement. *The 5 recommendations (= core content to visualize) 1. Strengthen national coordination within Parties to the BBNJ Agreement (i.e. across environment and fisheries departments) 2. Invest in evidence-based approaches for area-based management 3. Clarify processes, roles, and mechanisms through improved documentation and communication among relevant international bodies 4. Build trust through early, inclusive, and transparent engagement 5. Capitalise on momentum *Deliverables 1. Graphical Abstract • The graphical abstract summarizes the paper (highlighting the recommendations) in a concise, pictorial, professional form. It is designed to appeal to an interdisciplinary audience. • Ensure the image is 531 x 1328 pixels (h x w) or proportionally more, and is readable at a size of 5 x 13 cm. • Preferred file types for graphical abstracts are TIFF, EPS, PDF or MS Office files. • Edits may be requested following a peer-review process. 2. Infographic Set (for the five recommendations) • One cohesive infographic that can also be separated into a set of five linked panels/cards, visually representing each recommendation. • Should emphasize the wording of each recommendation as the visual anchor. • Graphics/infographics also to be provided as separate files so they can be integrated into a table of the recommendations within the paper. • Colour and black and white versions. For colours, please see BirdLife’s colour palette: https://birdlife.canto.global/g/OurStyleGuide/index?viewIndex=0 • Cohesive infographic suitable for use on social media and in powerpoint slides. • Format: vector file + high-res exports (PNG, PDF) in both square (social) and landscape (poster/slide) aspect ratios. 3. Visual of different organisations • Graphic illustrating the different organisations and their varying geographic extent, across a) the North-east Atlantic, b) Atlantic Ocean, and c) global, that need to cooperate for area-based management. • Logos of the different organisations to be displayed as part of the graphic. • A map could be used to help illustrate the geographic extent. *What to include in your application • Portfolio examples of graphical abstracts and/or infographics (academic or policy context preferred). • Proposed costs for this work • Your typical turnaround time for a project of this scope. • Expected turnaround time for any revisions. • Any questions about the source material. *Timeline • Timeline: ideally 2–3 weeks from kickoff. • Revisions: scope for further revisions once peer-review process with the journal has completed (this timeline is variable and difficult to foresee). *Source Materials Provided • Paper for submission (including abstract and five recommendations) • Suggestion for displaying the different organisations and their scope (including explanation of acronyms), logos of organisations to be included provided. • BirdLife colour palette • Journal formatting guidelines for target journal (Marine Policy)
